wins. In an election, people choose by voting (checking off a ballot)
o A ballot is a sheet of paper used for voting.
Today we are going to participate in an election.
We have a few animals that want to be chosen for something. I am going to read about
the animals and you will have to listen closely, because after I finish reading you will
have to choose your favorite animal according to what I read.
After I read you will elect an animal.

Pass out ballots, and have students vote.
Then pass out, I voted stickers and have students color them.
While students are coloring, describe to the students how you are going to count up the
votes and see which animal won.
Closure:

Tell the students who won. Tally votes and show students on smart board.

H. WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO
ABOUT IT?

Students may not know who the leader of Lynchburg is.

o Guide students to the answer. (Mayor is another name for a leader of a
community).
Students may not seem to be engaged
o I will quickly engage students by asking them a question about local govt or
elections.
o Students will have to be engaged when reading animal story so they can vote!
Students may not be able to decide which animal to vote for.
o Tell students to pick one animal that they liked the most.
o Tell students that there is no wrong answer.
Students may not be able to color their I voted stickers.
o Students can take the stickers home and color them, or they can color them the
next day during snack time.
