IRRIGATION
2.1 General:
Irrigation may defined as science of artificial application
of water to the land in accordance with the crop requirements
throughout the crop period for full fledged nourishment of the crop.
NECESSITY OF IRRIGATION:-
(1) Inadequate rain fall
(2) Uneven distribution of rainfall
(3) Growing a number of crops during a year
(4) Growing superior crops.
SYSTEM OF IRRIGATION:-
In a system of irrigation we have got three components.
(1) The source of water
(2) Storage system
(3) Distribution system
2.2 Advantages and disadvantages of irrigation:
Advantages:-
(1)Increase in food production:-
(2)Optimum benefits:-
(3)Elimination of mixed cropping:-
(4)Generation of hydro electric power
(5)Domestic water supply:-
(6) Facilities of communication:-
(7)Island navigation:-
(8)Afforestation:-
Disadvantages:
(1) Irrigation may contribute to water pollution.
(2) Over irrigation may lead to water logging and may reduce crop yields.
(3) Irrigation may result in colder and damper climate causing out break of diseases.
(4) Irrigation is complex and expensive in itself.
2.3 Water requirement of crops:
A water requirement of crop means the total quantity and the way in which a crop requires
water, from the time it is sawn to the time it is harvested.
CROP PERIOD : It is the “time that elapses from the instant of sowing of crop to the instant of its
harvesting”.
BASE PERIOD : It is the “time between the first watering of crop at the time it’s sowing to its last watering
before harvesting”.
Duty of crop :It is the “numbers of hectors a land irrigated for full growth of a crop by supply of
1 meter cube per second of water continuously during the entire
Delta of crop :it is the “total quantity of water required by crop for its full growth or the total depth of water
required by the crop to reach maturity”.
Δ = (864 x B) / D in cm
Where,
Δ - is delta in cm.
D - is duty in hectors per cumecs.
B - is base period in days.
