Assignment 3 Due: Feb. 11, 2011

1. A Watt’s sixbar linkage is shown below

(1) For the given position, find the angular position of link O4C by solving the following vector
equation

Then, find the position of point P with respect to X2-Y2 coordinate system.
(2) Find the extreme positions of point P graphically. Give the corresponding 2 with respect to X1-
Y1 coordinate system. Indicate the range of point P’s horizontal motion.

2. Three fourbar linkages are given below. If the linkage is crank-rocker, find the minimum
transmission angle and check whether it is possible to have   90 . If the linkage is triple-rocker,
find  2 when the transmission angle is zero and find the transmission angle when the linkage is at
the toggle position. If the linkage is Grashof double-rocker, find  2 when the transmission angle is
zero and 90o, respectively.

3. The figure shows a single action toggle mechanism. A motor with a clock-wise constant speed is
used to drive link 2 (O2A). The downward stroke of the slider is used to press a workpiece.

(a) Find the motion range of the slider, i.e., maximum x and minimum x.
(b) Find time ratio TR.
(c) Define the transmission angle between the slider and link 5 (BC) according to the definition of
the transmission angle for the fourbar linkage. Find the corresponding maximum and minimum
transmission angles.

Note: You may present you solution on the same drawing. However, as the drawing is not in a full
scale, please pay attention to the scale used.

4. A fivebar linkage is given below. One end of Link 5 or PC is connected to coupler point P and the
other end is pin C that moves in a slot DE.

(1) For 2 146 or 214 , find the angle 3 of link 3 (AB) and the angle 4 of link 4 (O4B)
analytically.
(2) Find the position of coupler point P.
(3) Find the angle 5 of link 5 (PC) and the position g of point C by solving the following vector
loop equation:

(4) Use the provided Matlab program position_fourbar_360.m to make the following plots:
(a) 3 vs. 2
(b) 4 vs. 2
(c)  vs. 2
(d) Px vs. 2 and Py vs. 2
for one revolution of the crank.
