Room 204 Update December 9, 2012 Spring Street School Mrs.

Liportos class

General Information Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers that put together the SSS Craft Night on Friday. What a fun event! Graham and Mr. Liporto attended and had a blast making some fun projects and eating some tasty treats. I had a great time helping kids make pinecone birdfeeders. It was nice to see so many students there with their families! Report cards will go home this week in the Monday folders. Please sign the envelope that they come home in and return it to school. We will use the envelope again for the second and third trimesters. Its definitely the start of the holiday season because all of the fourth grade teachers were talking about how the students all had a little bit extra spirit this week. The quality of the work, the focus and self-control were a challenge. Please help me remind the kids that we still have a lot of learning (and fun) to have before vacation and I need their best every day. Secret Snowflake reminderstudents will randomly pick their Secret Snowflakes on Monday. The following snowflake surprises are due on the dates listed below:

-Monday, December 17th, make a bookmark with your Secret Snowflakes name on it (to be passed out on Tuesday, the 18th.) -Tuesday, December 18th- create a piece of writing for your SS, such as story starring them, or a poem (To be passed out Wednesday, December 19th) -Wednesday, December 19th- free choicefor example, make a craft, draw a picture, write a top ten list for your SS (To be passed out Thursday, December 20th) -Thursday, December 20th- bring in a gift that costs no more than $5-$7 that you think your SS would enjoy (no food, please); a book is always nice! We will exchange gifts and make guesses as to who the Secret Snowflake is at our holiday party on 12/21 at 1:45 A Note from the 4th Grade Celebration Committee In preparation for the 4th Grade celebration the PTO is putting together a slideshow of memories and we need your help! it should not be a regular occurrence. If they are not in on Friday, the students have until Monday morning to bring it in or they receive a zero for their minutes that week. Please help me in reminding the students to turn these in on time. Writing We will continue to work on our tradition writing in the classroom. Most students have finished their organizers and are ready to write some interesting opening paragraphs. This week we will also take some time to write out descriptions of our artifacts for our Artifact Museum on Wednesday morning. Language Arts I have been very impressed with the kids inferencing skills! They are coming in with a lot of knowledge about this skill. We will continue to practice this in our guided reading groups and through a nonfiction poem about the moon. In our Daily 3 work, we will continue to look at different winter holidays and practice recognizing different types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory and imperative). Math We will be finishing with unit 5 in math this week. We will spend some time looking at the powers of ten and rounding with large numbers. Near the end of the week we will review what we have learned so far and work on an open response. Math Club this week will focus on multiplication using larger numbers and anything else the students dont feel confident with from unit 5. All students are welcome to attend from 8:00am to 8:30am on Wednesday mornings.

*Lowell Mills Field Trip- Monday, February 4th (rescheduled date) *MCAS Long Composition Tuesday, Mar. 19 *MCAS English Language Arts Wednesday, Mar. 27- Friday, Mar. 29 *MCAS Math Tuesday, May 14Wednesday, May 15 Homework I have been reminding the students that when they are doing math homework that they should show all of their work. Some of the students are doing work in their heads and making mistakes. This is a good habit to get in as the problems become more involved. Also, more and more students are forgetting to bring their reading logs in signed on Friday. I do allow them to bring them in the following Monday if they should occasionally forget, but

Please have your child bring in his/her artifacts/items on Tuesday or Wednesday. If you feel the item should not be carried into school, please bring it in and be prepared to take it home during the day. This is a wonderful museum and, thanks to a local sponsor, it is FREE to everyone who visits this coming week! Hope to see your there! In class we will continue with the various contributions and traditions that immigrant groups have made to America. Our next topic is citizens rights and responsibilities! Science In science, we will continue our exploration of simple machines with the inclined plane after finishing our

experiment with levers. During each class we keep reinforcing the big idea that simple machines help us do work by reducing the amount of effort needed, although it does increase the distance needed to complete the task. Happy Birthday!!! DECEMBER Birthdays:
