WHO WE ARE
The Nisargopchar Ashram established by Mahatma Gandhi at Urulikanchan in March 1946 is dedicated to promote health care through naturopathy. Gandhiji had good faith in Nature Cure and practiced naturopathy to keep himself fit. He wrote several articles highlighting the benefits of naturopathy. Convinced about its benefits, Gandhiji decided to promote naturopathy for rural people and general public. Gandhiji came to Urulikanchan on March 22, 1946 with Dr. Susheela Nair, Smt. Prabhavati Jayprakash Narayan, Smt. Sushila Pai and Rajkumari Amruta Kaur, spent 8 days and established the Nisargopchar Gramsudhar Trust. He treated hundreds of patients and prepared a master plan for management of various facilities. Shri. Morarji Desai was appointed as the Chairman with Shri. Balkoba Bhave, Mrs. Gulben Mehta, Dr. Jehangir Patel as the Founder Trustees and Dr. Manibhai Desai as the Managing Trustee. The royal Scindia family of Gwalior, Shri. Mahadev Tatyaba Kanchan, Shri. B.M. Bansali and many other local leaders provided land and finance to establish the Ashram. Eminent Gandhian volunteers such as Shri. Krishna Chandra Agarwal, Smt. Gangabehn Bhate, Shri. Vishnupant Gokhale, Smt. Hoshiyaribehn Bohara and Shri. Ganesh Behede dedicated their entire lives to the ashram for serving the patients. Presently, Shri. Arvind N. Mafatlal is the Chairman of the Ashram. Urulikanchan village is located 30 km away from Pune on Solapur road (NH 17). Public conveyance such as railway shuttle service and city bus services are available to reach the Ashram from Pune.
WHAT WE DO
Patients suffering from functional disorders are benefitted from Nature Cure. People suffering from blood pressure, arthritis, digestive disorders, asthma, skin diseases, obesity and stress have benefitted the most. The Ashram has residential facilities to accommodate 200 patients, where over 6000 patients are treated every year. The ashram is well equipped to provide various treatments. The daily routine at the ashram starts with meditation, yoga, massage, mud bath, sun bath, hydro therapy, walking and other special exercises. Specific treatments such as neuro therapy, acupressure, magnet therapy and physiotherapy are prescribed to treat specific problems. Lectures on
naturopathy, healthy life style and Gandhian values followed by evening prayers are an integral part of the daily routine. A healthy diet is an important component of the system. A hygienically managed kitchen provides various types of diets to suit individual patients. A well laid out spacious walking track in the midst of lawns and grasses, keeps the walkers fresh and energetic. The library with a collection of 50,000 books on nature cure, philosophy and Gandhian values, provides good food for thought. Generally, patients need to stay for 2-4 weeks to be rid of their health disorders. The ashram has also been organising awareness camps, trainings for naturopaths and herbal healers, and conducting research on impact of therapies for treating various diseases. The ashram has also brought out several important publications on nature cure, good health, positive attitude and lifestyle management and maintains a book sale section of useful publications on naturopathy.
A wide range of accommodation is available in the range of Rs. 80-600 per day inclusive of all treatment facilities. The ashram also accommodates poor patients free of cost. Patients can make prior reservation well in advance to ensure accommodation of their choice. It is a unique opportunity to keep healthy and happy.
