Township
considers
applying for
park grant
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
The township is exploring the
option of applying for a Burling-
ton County Municipal Park Devel-
opment Grant.
The township was able to quali-
fy for the full $250,000 offered by
the county in 2012, which was ap-
plied to repairing and reopening
the skate park at Freedom Park.
The grant is a reimbursement
grant, in which the township
would have to spend the money be-
fore it got a check from the county.
We need to prioritize and see
which way to go, Deputy Mayor
Chris Buoni said.
Council agreed it would submit
the application, which is ap-
proaching the deadline. It was un-
clear how the money would be
used.
Township manager Chris
Schultz advised that the township
would have a better chance of ac-
quiring the full $250,000 if there
was a county push, including
cleaning up parks and trails that
could be used by residents in the
county and not exclusively Med-

ford residents.
The idea of the application was
met with some opposition from
councilmember James Randy
Pace, who wasnt shy about his is-
sues with receiving the money last
year for the skate park.
He questioned whether the
township could apply the grant to
open space debt. Pace wanted a
long-, mid- and short-term plan for
the funding and how the money
would be applied.
I can understand and appreci-
ate getting our tax dollars back,
Pace said. If we can get a list of
authorized use for that grant
money. As much as I would like to
get those tax dollars back, there
isnt anything to get back. What
we have available is spent through
2029.
Pace went on to note he would
love to see the trails updated, the
dog park expanded in addition to
other updates in the township.
I want to apply for the grant,
but I want to use it correctly, Pace
said.
Additionally, the council was
uneasy about constructing any
new facilities when there are
parks that could use clean up and
updating, members of the council
said. Medford Township staffer
Beth Portocalis said the township
could benefit from the use of fair-
grounds, as she has been receiving
numerous requests from large
companies to host picnics and
other events in Medfords parks.
Requests have come in about
using Freedom Park for events
and such, since its cheaper to host
a picnic or team-building activi-
ties than rent out a banquet hall,
Portocalis said.
A resolution will be prepared to
move forward for application and
further discussion.
In other news: Council dis-
cussed the possibility of a town-
ship-wide smoking prohibition.
Schultz and Portocalis will be cre-
ating an ordinance for the council
to discuss at the next meeting,
which will be held June 4 at the
Union Fire House, 1 Firehouse
Lane, at 7:30 p.m. due to primaries.

Fewer than 10 harassment, in-
timidation and bullying inci-
dents were recorded last year
from July 1 through Dec. 31 at
the Medford Township School
District.
According to Gale Ferraro,
the districts anti-bullying coor-
dinator, a majority of the inci-
dents were name-calling and ha-
rassment.
At the Board of Educations
meeting last week, Ferraro said
the district has been reducing
the number of investigations
and violations.
At the elementary level, there
were four investigations and one
violation, and at the middle
school level, there were five in-
vestigations and three viola-
tions.
She noted the district has in-
creased the number of programs
to raise awareness about pre-
venting bullying, harassment
and intimidation on an ongoing
basis.
Theres always room for im-
provement, Ferraro said,
adding parents are the biggest
reporters of incidents in the dis-
trict.
The incidents are very minor
things, but we take it very seri-
ously. We want our kids to feel
safe.

Mayor supports
incumbent council members
It has been approximately 17 months
since Jeff Beenstock, James Randy Pace,
and Chuck Watson took office on Medford
Township Council.
All three men ran for office on a reform
platform to change the way our township
did business and to remove the outside po-
litical influences that had caused our
beloved community so much financial in-
stability and turmoil.
Having worked side-by-side with all
three men for the past 17 months, I can
state, unequivocally, that Jeff Beenstock,
James Randy Pace and Chuck Watson
are men of integrity and honor.
I am privileged to have such intelligent,
hardworking and honest individuals as my
colleagues on council.
Each of them has unselfishly, and with
vision, made important decisions to im-
prove our community.
I look forward to working with these
men as we continue to steer Medford on a
path to financial stability.
This year, as the Primary Election ap-
proaches, toxic political mailers are arriv-
ing at my house, reminding me of the way
our town used to be run only a few short
years ago.
There is no place for these types of per-
sonal attacks in a local election. Nor is
there any reason for our community to re-
turn to the days when local candidates
spend $100,000 on an election.
The enormity of such campaign expen-
ditures by one candidate can mean only
one thing: the outside influences that did so
much damage to Medford just a few short
years ago are trying to return and regain a
political foothold in our community. Please
dont allow our hometown to fall back into
the hands of those who are only motivated
by power, greed and ambition.
Please come out and vote in the Primary
on June 4 and join me in voting for Jeff
Beenstock, James Randy Pace and
Chuck Watson.

June 4 Primary Elections
In 2012, Medford turned a new leaf with
a new township council that was independ-
ent of New Jerseys big-party politics.
The June 4 Primary brings with it im-
portant reasons for you to re-elect Been-
please see LETTERS, page 7
E
very four years, there is a big,
big election in New Jersey that
costs candidates lots and lots of
money. Gubernatorial candidates ad-
vertise hard and heavy throughout the
state, spending boatloads of cash in the
New York City and Philadelphia metro
markets.
This years election for Garden State
governor is extra special because the
incumbent, Chris Christie, is thought
to be a leading candidate for the Re-
public nomination for president in
2016.
Before that is a possibility, though,
he will have to beat his Democratic op-
ponent in New Jersey this November.
And, even before that, hell have to
defeat his Republican opposition for
the gubernatorial nomination, Seth
Grossman, an Atlantic County lawyer
and political veteran.
While the focus of this election has
already been on Christie and top Dem-
ocratic candidate Barbara Buono, both
must make it through next Tuesdays
Primary Election before they can com-
pletely turn their focus to Novembers
General Election.
Buono, a state senator from Newark
who has been representing the 18th
Legislative District since 2002, will
square off against Troy Webster, an
aide to the mayor of East Orange.
If Buono and Christie succeed next
week, as many expect, theyll officially
turn their focus on each other, letting
the money, and muckraking, fly.
Both parties have already begun tel-
evision ad campaigns, and the number
of ads and ferocity of the content will
surely pick up as Novembers election
approaches.
Its an unfortunate reality of cur-
rent-day electioneering, especially in
this state.
So expect your TV sets, your radios
and your newspapers to be filled with
political advertisements over the next
six months until an official governor is
named.
In the meantime, get out and vote in
the Primary Election next Tuesday,
June 4, if youre a registered Republi-
can or Democrat.
In addition to the gubernatorial elec-
tion, there are also elections for the
General Assembly, state Senate and
local governing bodies. This is your
first chance to let your voice be heard.
Campaign season has begun
With Primary Elections next week, let the advertising begin

stock, Pace and Watson for Med-
ford Township Council.
One of the critical elements of
the success of our first two years
has been the balance and dedica-
tion of this council.
It is truly unique to have five
people serving together who are
willing to listen to each other and
to the public, with the sole inten-
tion of finding the best solutions
to problems facing our town.
This year, we are asking for
you to help keep Medford moving
in a positive direction. We have a
good thing going and now is not
the time to turn back to politics
as usual.
In less than two years, we have
transformed our municipality
into a highly efficient, accessible
and transparent local govern-
ment.
We have replaced government
expenditures with opportunities
for volunteerism and community
service and have left no stone un-
turned in our quest for leaner,
friendlier government. We have
accomplished a lot in our first
two years, but our work is not yet
complete.
Please vote in the June 4 Pri-
mary.
When you do, make sure you
vote from the bottom up. Vote
Watson, Pace and Beenstock and
keep Medford headed in the right
direction.

Art, Wine & Music Festival June 2
ShopRite of Medford joins the
Medford Arts Center and Medford
Business Association on present-
ing the annual Art, Wine & Music
Festival in Medford Village on
Sunday afternoon, June 2, from
noon to 4 p.m.
The street will be closed to
motor vehicles so attendees can
walk, sip and browse freely.
More than 40-tented booths will
line Main Street, filled with artists
and crafters showing their wares.
From oil and watercolor
painters through photographers,
jewelers, glassware painters,
wood-workers, decoy carvers,
fiber artists and more, the street
teems with creativity.
Music is an integral part of the
festival, with eight bands of di-
verse genres performing from
porches along the street and in the
gazebo, providing a high-energy
sound-track to the event. Lost in
Brunswick will be the featured
band, joined by M-Town Jazz,
Mike Kaufman, Branin Road,
Clive & Debbie Simpkins and the
South Jersey Pops German Band.
Seven Outer Coastal Plain
wineries also bring their best vin-
tages to the street, providing tastes
of whites and reds and selling bot-
tles and cases.
This provides an important
marketing opportunity for a main-
stay of South Jersey agriculture
as well as bringing a treat to the
street.
Children are not forgotten at
the family happening. The ever-
popular Give & Take Jugglers per-
form at the north end, while Wood-
ford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge
brings live animals and artifacts
to anchor the south.
A face-painter, clown and bal-
loon-making wizard will also en-
tertain.
In 2013 a new attraction has
been added a car show of about
30 antique Chevrolet Corvettes.
The classic automobiles, brought
by the Medford Lakes Corvette
Club, will angle into the curbs on
both sides of the street at the
south end.
We are delighted to partner
with the club to bring a whole new
group of visitors to the event and
extend the viewing experience for
all our visitors.
Generous sponsors provide the
support needed to make the event
happen.
Care One at Evesham Campus,
PSE&G. AAA Midatlantic, Ameri-
kick, Bathfitter, Columbia Bank,
ING, and Ultimate Soccer are
among the 2013 supporters.
For more information on the
Festival, call Janet Jackson-Gould
at (609) 654-6485 or Dave Vaughn at
(609) 969-3838 or visit www.med-

letterS to the editor
So, I made a point of seeking
out Randy Pace to hear his ideas
and his message first hand. Coun-
cilman Paces message was gen-
uine and authentic, and I devoted
my time to the worthy Medford
First cause.
It was a very rewarding experi-
ence, and I was able to see their
common sense, grassroots cam-
paign topple the political ma-
chine that had a hold on our town
for so many years.
In August of that year, I left for
college in Washington, D.C. When
I returned to Medford a few
weeks ago after my second year at
school, I was taken aback by the
plethora of negative political
mailers that I have received.
These mailers seem to belittle
the difficult decisions our current
council faced in its first 18
months in office.
The upcoming Primary Elec-
tion presents the people of Med-
ford with a clear choice: To con-
tinue with the Medford First mes-
sage of transparent and fiscally
responsible governance.

Members of police take
part in Police Unity Tour
Several members of the Med-
ford Township Police Department
recently took part in the Police
Unity Tour.
The Police Unity Tour began in
1997 as a way of raising awareness
for law enforcement officers who
have died in the line of duty. It also
raises funds for the National Law
Enforcement Officers Memorial
and Museum in Washington, D.C.
Detective Corporal Jason
Deroian and Police Officer Justin
Chase joined nearly 1,600 officers
and supporters from as far away
as Australia and rode their bicy-
cles from New Jersey to Washing-
ton D.C.
The ride began on Thursday,
May 9 in East Hanover and ended
in Washington, D.C., on Sunday,
May 12 at the National Law En-
forcement Officers Memorial. On
Monday May 13, officers joined
survivors and thousands of other
law enforcement officers and sup-
porters for the 25th Annual Can-
dlelight Vigil honoring the 120 law
enforcement officers who lost
their lives in the line of duty dur-
ing 2012. Joining Deroian and
Chase were Police Officer Bill
Webb and Retired Lieutenant Tom
Switick.
The members of the Medford
Police Department raised $7,000
for the National Law Enforcement
Officers Memorial and Museum.
Overall, the Police Unity Tour
raised more than $1.7 million.
