Experiment No 4 Objective:: To Determine The Coefficient of Friction and Efficiency of A V Thread

The document describes an experiment to determine the coefficient of friction and efficiency of a V-thread screw jack. A duplex screw jack, hangers, weights, and a load yoke are used. Measurements of load and effort are recorded as weights are added to determine the coefficient of friction and efficiency. Formulas for effort, coefficient of friction, and efficiency are provided. Observations show the mean efficiency is 26%.

Experiment no 4 Objective:

To determine the coefficient of friction and efficiency of a v thread Apparatus: Duplex screw jack Hangers Weights

Theoretical discussion: Thread:

A screw thread, often shortened to thread, is a helical structure used to convert between rotational and linear movement or force. A screw thread is a ridge wrapped around a cylinder or cone in the form of a helix, with the former being called a straight thread and the latter called a tapered thread. More screw threads are produced each year than any other machine element.[1] The mechanical advantage of a screw thread depends on its lead, which is the linear distance the screw travels in one revolution.[2] In most applications, the lead of a screw thread is chosen so thatfriction is sufficient to prevent linear motion being converted to rotary, that is so the screw does not slip even when linear force is applied so long as no external rotational force is present. This characteristic is essential to the vast majority of its uses. The tightening of a fastener's screw thread is comparable to driving a wedge into a gap until it sticks fast through friction and slight plastic deformation.

V threads:
V threads are used for joining two components.they are not used for joining two components. They have high friction between threads. Nuts and bolts are common example of this type of thread

Helix
Helix is the curve trace by a point when it is moving on the screw.

Helix angle
It is the angle which the helix makes with the screw or bolt makes with the axis of bolt.

Pitch
The distance between two specific points.

Lead
Axial distance travelled by bolt in one complete revol

Single start thread

In single start thread the distance travelled by bolt is equal to pitch.

Multi start thread

In multi start threads in one revolution more threads are present.

Procedure:
Weigh the load yoke and measure the efforts pulley diameter. Setup the one of the nuts in either raising or lowering the load. Place an initial load on the hanger. Add weights to the efforts hangers so as to cause the load to be raised or lowered at a uniform speed. Record the corresponding values of load and effort. Repeat the experiment for different loads. As we know that the effort required to raise the load is given by:

P = Wtan(+) P = W(tan +tan/1-tantan) P = W(tan + /1-tan) = P-Wtan/W+Ptan / = P-Wtan/W+Ptan(cos) / = tan-1 /
