The city of Beijing has a long and rich his-
tory that dates back over 3,000 years. Prior to
the uniFcation o China by the lirst Lmperor
in 221 BC, Beijing was or centuries the capital
of the ancient states of Ji and Yan. During the
Frst millennia o imperial rule, Beijing was a
proincial city in northern China.
Its stature grew in the 10th to the 13th cen-
turies when the nomadic Khitan and Jurchen
peoples rom the steppes expanded southward
and made the city a capital o their dynasties,
the Liao and Jin. When Kublai Khan made
Dadu the capital o the Mongol-led \uan
Dynasty (12791368), all of China was ruled
rom Beijing or the Frst time. lrom 129
onward, with the exception o two interludes
from 1368 to 1421 and 1928 to 1949, Bei-
jing would remain as China's capital, sering
as the seat o power or the Ming Dynasty
,1421-1644,, the Manchu-led Qing Dynasty
,1644-1912,, the early Republic o China
,1912-1928, and now the People's Republic
o China ,1949-present,.
Peking opera is a traditional orm o Chinese
theater well known throughout the nation.
Commonly lauded as one of the highest
achievements of Chinese culture, Beijing
opera is perormed through a combination
o song, spoken dialogue, and codiFed action
sequences involving gestures, movement,
Fghting and acrobatics. Much o Beijing opera
is carried out in an archaic stage dialect quite
dierent rom Modern Standard Chinese and
from the modern Beijing dialect.
The cloisonn (or Jingtailan, literally Blue
of Jingtai) metalworking technique and
tradition is a Beijing art specialty, and is one
of the most revered traditional crafts in
China. Cloisonn making requires elaborate
and complicated processes which include
base-hammering, copper-strip inlay, soldering,
enamel-Flling, enamel-Fring, surace polishing
and gilding. Beijings lacquerware is also well
known or its sophisticated and intrinsic pat-
terns and images carved into its surface, and
the various decoration techniques of lacquer
include carved lacquer and engraved gold.
History Culture Cuisine
Nightlife
Huaiyang cuisine has been praised since
ancient times in China, and it was a general
practice or an oFcial traelling to Beijing to
take up a new post to bring along with him
a che specialising in luaiyang cuisine. 1he
element of traditional Beijing culinary and
gastronomical cultures o enjoying artistic per-
ormances such as Beijing opera while dining
directly deeloped rom the similar practice in
the culture of Jiangsu and Huaiyang cuisines.
Chinese Islamic cuisine is another important
component o Beijing cuisine, and was Frst
prominently introduced when Beijing became
the capital o the \uan Dynasty.
loweer, the most signiFcant contribution
to the formation of Beijing cuisine came
from Shandong cuisine, as most chefs from
Shandong came to Beijing en masse during the
Qing Dynasty. Unlike the earlier two cuisines,
which were brought by the ruling class such as
nobles, aristocrats and bureaucrats, and then
spread to the general populace, the introduc-
tion of Shandong cuisine begun with serving
the general populace, with much wider market
segment, from wealthy merchants to the
working class.
One place that cannot be omitted when
considering the nightlie options or the old
Beijinger is the Tianqiao (Overbridge) Area.
In actual fact it is not a bridge but a location
popular or gathering to eat, drink and to enjoy
the entertainments and amusements on offer
there. Tianqiao has been a favorite venue for
ordinary folk since the Yuan Dynasty (1271-
1368). This area was also the cradle of Chinese
folk culture and art where many original folk
perormances such as acrobatics and music
were devised. The area has changed some-
what over the centuries but the quality of the
entertainment here continues to be of a high
standard.
Two of the most famous venues are the Tian-
qiao Theater and Tianqiaole Tea House and it
can be found at No.113 in Beiwei Lu, Xuanwu
District. 1he theatre specializes in modern
song and dance perormances while by con-
trast the teahouse offers the more traditional
arts o Beijing Opera, Acrobatics, Martial Arts
as well as folk songs. Visitors to China may be
a little apprehensie about going to the opera
but it is an experience not to be missed as
the perormances are really quite spectacular,
including as they do music, dance, acrobatics
and spectacular costumes.
