Niagara on the Lake lesson
Let me tell you about our weekend
in Niagara Falls, Canada. We arrived
at dusk,in our room overlooking
the Falls, waiting for the lights to
come on over the Falls. We went to a
very nice restaurant to overlook the
Falls. No lights! Finally, the second
evening, we deduced our United
States government had turned off
the lights, saving 1 Flip Switcher and
annoying a lot of people. Our day
included a beautiful short road trip
to Niagara On The Lake. Oh, my,
why cant Port Clinton take a lesson
from this nostalgic, charming town.
Beautiful plantings on the sidewalks,
inviting shops, galleries, ice cream,
etc. This is a destination town. Why
cant Port Clinton do the same! We
have all the natural resources, but
none of the enthusiasm!
Wake up, Port Clinton!
Sandy Schaffner
Dear Port Clinton,
Dont do it! I mean Waterworks
Park. All these promises of jobs and
income to the city is so ridiculous.
We hear what we want to hear, and
when these promises are presented,
we want to believe them. Born and
raised in Port Clinton, I have seen so
much of the area shoreline sold and
built up. Please let our children and
grandchildren enjoy the last piece
of shoreline we have. Thinking that
this property will be the answer to
all Port Clinton fnancial problems
is ridiculous. Until laws are changed
nationwide, we will never have that
thriving community we once had.
Our jobs are in other countries.
Wake up Port Clinton. Keep and
protect the precious posessions we
have left.

Port Clinton Middle School Fleet 7 began an interdisciplin-
ary unit revolving around the young adult book The Hunger
Games. Last Monday morning students gathered in the ex-
tended learning area, divided into their districts as they held
their own Reaping Ceremony. The Fleet 7 teachers dressed as
characters from the story while acting out the Reaping Cer-
emony, where two students from each district were randomly
selected as tributes from their district. See the Video or view
more pictures in the Photo Album at www.pccsd.net
Students will be participating in various challenges
throughout the unit. The challenges are both intellectual
(group quizzes, games, etc.) and physical (minute-to-win-it
style games, and more) in attempts for their district to win
the PCMS Hunger Games. Instead of tributes being eliminat-
ed, districts will be trying
to win these challenges in
order to earn Mockingjay
badges for their posters. At
the end of the unit, the dis-
trict with the most Mock-
ingjays will win a prize.
The Language Arts teach-
ers have been working to-
gether to create an inter-
active unit with the other
subjects: Math, Science,
Global Cultural Awareness,
Work & Family, and Art.
Ms. Mallory Myers, Lan-
guage Arts teacher stated,
Our goal with having our
own Hunger Games is to
have something the kids
can get excited about while
building teamwork and
unity, along with inspiring
random acts of kindness.
Random acts of kindness is
a theme discussed through-
out the story as well as in
many Port Clinton Middle
School programs.

The Flagship Awards are part of Port Clinton City
School Districts recognition program to honor par-
ents, community members, staff and students that
help the district fulfll its motto of Proudly Charting
a Course for Success. At the October 21 meeting, the
Port Clinton Board of Education recognized the fol-
lowing individuals with Flagship Awards.
Bob Beck, Captain Award
Dedicated, accountable, hard-workingthese are all
terms to describe Mr. Bob Beck. As the previous PCHS
Assistant Principal, Mr. Beck spent countless hours at
PCHS for various school events. He was always willing
to go the extra mile. For several years, he even spent 24-
hour shifts at the high school for the American Cancer
Relay for Life. During this time he wasnt just relaxing
he was on-call to all committee members rounding
up tables, setting up audio equipment, allowing access
to computer equipment for the committee and much
more.
Most recently, the special education department was
fortunate to have Mr. Becks dedication. He met with
educators, parents, and students to ensure all Port
Clinton City School District students received an out-
standing education. He was aware of constantly chang-
ing rules and legislation that affect special education.
These are just a few examples of many to show how
Mr. Beck went the extra mile with his time and ef-
fort to make Port Clinton City Schools a better place
for students. The Port Clinton Board of Education
thanked him for his leadership and commitment to
learning with a Flagship Captain Award.
Michelle Kodak, First Mate Award
Michelle Kodak volunteers as the Chair of Conces-
sions for the Port Clinton Music Boosters. In addition
to coordinating and stocking the stadium concession
stands, she has worked the past fve years at the visi-
tors side concession stand. With all the events at the
stadium, concession stands are open for business at all
varsity, JV, and middle school home football games, as
well as for track season in the spring. Michelle donates
countless hours of planning, ordering, shopping, prep-
ping, cooking, cleaning, and maintaining inventory.
She also organizes and directs all volunteers that work
at both the home and visitor stands. This is all done
while owning and operating her own bakery business,
The Cakerys Bakery, in downtown Port Clinton.
She is kind, patient, organized and has in depth
knowledge of what it takes to feed large quantities of
people. Cleanliness is a priority for Michelle to ensure
everything is up to food service standards. Visiting
customers always have positive comments for the PC

offered. For volunteering her time and talent to the stadium
concession stands, the Board of Education recognized Mi-
chelle Kodak for her service to the Port Clinton City School
District to beneft students.
Fred & Dawn Zink, Zink Calls, Crew Award
Zink Calls is an outstanding community partner with Port
Clinton City Schools. Owners, Fred & Dawn Zink are always
willing to help with a wide range of school district activities.
They open the entire business for grade 5 students to tour
as part of career day, showing students each aspect of produc-
tion of making duck, goose & turkey calls and the various job
skills required. The staff is always welcoming and the students
enjoy the day. In addition, when PCHS students in Industrial
Technology wanted to make design and make duck calls, the
Zinks were once again gracious and visited the high school
and provided various supplies to the classroom and offered
guidance for students.
Recently, they offered the use of their entire warehouse for
the PC Fullbackers to host the 1st annual wild game feed.
With over 300 in attendance, the event raised funds for the
football program and was a great welcome for Coach Beau
Carmon and his family to the Port Clinton Community.
For all they do for the students, staff, and community of Port
Clinton City Schools, Dawn & Fred Zink received the Flagship
Crew Award.

Thank You!
The 35th Annual Apple Festival was held on October 12-13, 2013.
We could not have asked for better weather or a better turnout. What a
wonderful weekend flled with food, rides, crafts and entertainment. When
we say that the festival and all of the great activities would not be possible
without the help of generous sponsors and volunteers, we truly mean this.
From the Village Departments to the property owners to the volunteers and
vendors it really takes everyone working together to make our festival the
success that it is. The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce would like
to thank the following businesses and individuals for their contribution to
this years festival:
