0.1 This Indian Standard (First Revision ) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 9 November 1967, after the draft finalized by the
Screw Threads and Fasteners Sectional Committee had ~ n approved by
the Mechanical Engineering Division Council.
0.2 This standard was originally issued in 1962. This revision incorporates
the decision taken by the ISO/TO 2 Bolts, Nuts and Accessories.
0.3 This standard is based on:
Draft ISO Recommendation No, 940 Washers for hexagon bolts and
nuts, metric aeries. International Organization for Standardiza-
tion.
Doc: ISO/TC 2 (Secretariat-184) 302 First draft proposal for
washen for hexagon bolts and nuts - metric series - 42 up to
and including 150 mm thread diameter. International Organi-
zation for Standardization.
Doc: ISO/TO 2 (Secretariat-194) 326 Fint draft proposal for
washers for cheese head screws - metric series - I up to and
including 20 mm thread diameter. International Organization
for Standardization.

G.t For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard i. complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express-
ing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 21960.
The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should
be the same as that, of the specified value in t ~ s standard.

III 2016 1967
I. SCOPE
1.1 This standard lays down the requirements for plain washen of the
following types:
a) Machined washers, for precision and semi-precision grade of
general purpose bolts and screws, in the diameter range 1-7 to
155 rom;
b) Punched washers, type A, for black grade general purpose bolts
and screws, in the diameter range I-a to 52 rom; and
c) Punched washers, type B, for slotted head screws in the diameter
range I-a to 22 mm,
2. MANUFACTURE
2.1 Materlal- Washen shall be made of steel, brass, aluminium or any
other suitable metal specified by the purchaser,
2.2 Worlmuua.Wp - The washen shall be free from cracks. bum, pits
and other defects, The holes shall be reasonably concentric with the outer
periphery. All sharp edges shall be removed,
3. DESIGNATION
3.{ A wuher shall be designated by name, type, size, number of thiI
standard and material.
&tlmplls:
a) A machined washer of size 10-5 mm made of br.. shall be
designated as:
Machined Washer 10-5 IS : 2016-Brals
b) A punched washer, Type B oCsize 14 mm made of brass shall
be designated as: .
Punched Washer Bl4 IS: 2016Brau
4. DIMENSIONS
4.1 The dimensions for machined washers, punched washers, types A and
B, shall be as given in Tables 1, 2 and 3-respectively ( SI' P 6 to II )_ These
tables also give the size of bolt or screw for which the washen are suitable.
4.2 The other dimensional requirements for punched washers covered ill
Tables 2 and 3 shall be as given in IS : 5369.1969*.t

5.1 The plain wuhen shall be supplied in natural finish unless otherwise
.pecified by the purchaser. At the request of the purchaser, washers may
be phosphate coated, nickel plated, tinned, galvanized, copper plated,
cadmium plated, etc. The properties of the plain washers shall not,
however. be impaired by the protective coating specified by the
purchaser.
6. PACKING
6.1 The plain washen may be packed as recommended below:
Sizes up to 10'5 mm In boxes of 1 000 pieces
Sizes&om 13to 19 mm In boxes of 500 pieces
Sizes 21 mm and above In boxes of 100 pieces.
The plain wuhen may allo be packed in quantities of 2 kg
and 50 kg.
7. MARKING
7.1 The packages containing wuhen Ihall be marked with the aize and
manufacturer'. name or trade-mark. .
7.2 ms Certification Marking
The product mayalso he marked with Standard Mark.
'.2.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provision of
Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made
thereunder. The details of conditions under which the licence for the use of
Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained
from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
