SEPEP - Speedball

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Unit 1 Year 10.

So what does SEPEP mean?


Sport Education in Physical Education Program. The model that we run our program from was developed by the Australian Sports Commission in 1995 and has been a highly successful PDHPE program focused on student centred learning. The concept of SEPEP has been around for a long time and was first officially tabled at an education conference in New York in 1985.

SEPEP Philosophy
It is based around the philosophy that community sport involvement (structured teams and competitions) has the potential to breed in its participants dedication, competence and commitment as well as physical, social and cognitive skills.

Speedball What the ??


We base our SEPEP competition around a combination of netball and soccer. (You could use any sport and /or combination of sports) We have found that by combining the sports of netball and soccer, most students will be somewhat comfortable in at least one of these skill areas. This promotes maximum participation of students throughout the SEPEP unit, greater player confidence and greater potential to build on and improve skills.

Basic structure
Students are put in the drivers seat they elect their own managerial board (called the sports board), they fulfil the roles associated with a officiating a sports competition (ie umpires or referees, publicity officers, equipment officers, coaches and captains), and they also determine the rules of the game that is to be played, and the details of the competition season.

Steps Involved

Student roles within the SEPEP unit


PARTICIPANT
All students are part of a team and are expected to participate 100% to the best of their ability.

TEAM ROLE
Sports board member, captain, coach, trainer, publicity officer. Each has a detailed role description.

DUTY ROLE
Referee, timekeeper, equipment officer, scorer. Each has a detailed role description.

The role of the teacher


Moving off centre stage Helping the students assume ownership and responsibility
Ongoing reflective practice, constant evaluation and improvement of teaching practice throughout the unit.

The development of the student


Active participation and development of physical skills.

Development of leadership skills

Promoting equity and inclusivity , support and encouragement of their peers.

Evaluating, learning and teaching skills developed

Problem solving and conflict resolution skills, taking responsibility for their behaviour

How do we assess student achievement of outcomes?

Player participation and skill improvement

Student commitment and ability to fulfil their duty and team roles Detailed written reflection and evaluation of their roles, participation, problems arising, achievements etc.

How do we finish our competition season?


Grand-final of course! Prizes and awards some of which are cumulative as they have been tallied throughout the season. (i.e. overall best and fairest, most improved etc) The girls determine these awards also. A small celebration for the hard work and commitment to their competition season.
