My goal is to explore my career options through job shadowing a seasoned professional in the eld In order to achieve my goal, I needed to understand the basis of career exploration and research effective methods. A well known method of career exploration, besides research, is rst hand job shadowing. Since then, I networked with a local professional in the eld of Polysomnography and scheduled job shadowing sessions that went into late hours and even overnight. In 1937, only 15 percent of high school students pursued a higher education which were upper-income families ! Nearly 60% of all jobs in the U.S. require a college degree ! It helps the student have his/her own general direction + Uncertainty can lead to wasted time, money, and effort ! Sleep studies are tests that measure how well you sleep and how well your body responds to sleep problems. + Polysomnography ! Polysomnography (PSG), a type of sleep study, is a multi-parametric test used in the study of sleep and as a diagnostic tool in sleep medicine. ! Brain (EEG) activity , eye movements (EOG), muscle activity or skeletal muscle activation (EMG) and heart rhythm (ECG) during sleep. + What did I know before entering the job shadow? + On the job: ! Shifts are typically overnight ! You must be dressed in full scrubs ! Be ready with a good attitude + Procedures 1. Review incoming patients medical description (age, issues, last time sleep study was done) 2. We patient arrives, lead them into their designated room, allow them to get comfortable and change into comfortable clothing + Procedures 3. Allow them to complete pre-study questionnaire 4. When patient is changing, organize electrode wires, cleaning paste, conducting paste, and gauze 5. When patient has changed, put on gloves and begin placing electrodes onto patient starting from the legs up + + 6. After all electrodes have been placed, plug in all wires to Alice 6 instrumentation 7.
