PUBLIC SPEAKING

Defines as an oral presentation in which a speaker addresses an audience.
Public speaking is also a process or an act of speaking to a group of people in a
structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence or entertain a listening
audience. Before the twentieth century, public speakers were customarily referred to as
orators and their discourses as orations. At the end of the 19
th
century, audiences no
longer regarded the orator as a larger-than-life figure to be regarded with awe and
deference. So began the shift from oratory to our modern-day public speaking. Although
the basic skills have changed little since ancient times, styles in public speaking have
changed during the past century. A popular pastime in the 19
th
century was
declamation, the recitation of a classical speech. Early in this century, the focus
changed to elocution, the control of voice and gesture for emphasis in public speaking.
Today, the emphasis is on extemporaneous speaking, giving a speech that has been
planned in advance but is delivered spontaneously.

WHY PUBLIC SPEAKING IS IMPORTANT

Public speaking is important as it function to transmit information, to motivating
people to act, or simply used to tell a story. Business leaders like Bill Gates use public
speaking to inform, persuade and motivate his audiences. Political leader such as
Nelson Mandela use public speaking to promote freedom and cooperation among
people in their countries and around the world. Public speaking will help to increase
your self confidence dramatically. It also help us to understand how to effectively get our
message (and the emotions tied to that message) across to another person. These
skills will help us to secure a better job. How we present ourselves at a job interview
that will be the ultimate decider as to whether or not we land that job.
