Are fringe players the answer to Roys problems?

Following a press conference where Hodgson proclaimed he would be giving

fringe players the chance, Saido Berahino, Stewart Downing and Nathaniel
Clyne have been included in his squad for the forthcoming fixtures against
Slovenia and Scotland.
The much talked about 21 year old Baggies forward, Berahino is the highest
scoring Englishmen in the Premier League so far this season and has rightly
earned a call up to the senior side. The young striker will bring a much needed
pace and will to score to an England side that is becoming boring to watch. In the
absence of Sturridge, it is a very good opportunity for this young forward to
stake a claim as to why he should become a regular for Roy.
Earning his first call up since Hodgsons first game as England boss in 2012, at
the age of 30, is Stewart Downing. Deserving of the chance to add to his 34 caps
and 7 assists for England, following his emphatic start for West Ham, where he
has lead the Hammers renaissance with two goals and four assists. The West
Ham man will give Hodgson something to think about with his versatility, being
able to play on the right, left or in the centre of the midfield and with the ability
to unpick defences with two fantastic feet.
Finally, Nathaniel Clyne has also earned a long over due call up to try and resolve
the long-standing right back issue. The young Southampton fullback has been
earning all the plaudits, standing above his team mates at a very talented Ronald
Koeman lead Saints side. As well as being shrewd defensively, Clyne is very
promising going forward which all modern day full backs must be.
So how can these fringe players help out Roy?
Putting his faith in these types of players might just be the best decision Roy
Hodgson has made as England manager. Despite their undoubted talent and
blistering form, these co called fringe players are confident and fearless.
Arguably one of Englands biggest issues over the last ten years has been that the
regulars of the team dont care enough. As the travesty that was the 2010 World
Cup showed, the players care more about the name on the back of the shirt than
they do the front, this is probably why we have had no success since the boys of
66. There is no pride amongst the England national side. Look at the way David
Luiz belted out the Brazilian national anthem at the World Cup, all of the
successful sides have pool of talented, but passionate ones at that. English
players just see it as another chore that they must adhere too. So this is where
the fringe players come in. They will bring the pride and passion back into the
national side, as these players have had to earn their place in the squad and have
not just been given it for playing at high profiles clubs, like many others in the
squad. This passion and desire to represent their country may bring the side
together and help to drive England on. The fact that these players are on top
form at present will also be a benefit (obviously). The players that fill the squad
at the moment seem to play within themselves at not give 100% for England.
This was shown when Hodgson introduced Daniel Sturridge and Raheem

Sterling into the squad, two players that go against this completely and play out
side themselves and arent afraid of the opposition like some of the so called
more experienced players seem to be and this is why they stand out for
England. Anyway, back to the point. These fringe players that I have identified
will bring a new mentality to the side and will hopefully help England to success
in their forthcoming fixtures against Scotland and Slovenia.
