Introduction to
Oil Rig and Oil Platform
An oil platform, offshore platform or oil rig is a large
structure with facilities to drill wells and to extract and
process oil and natural gas
Depending on the circumstances, the platform may
be fixed to the ocean floor, may consist of an artifical island
or may float
A typical oil production platform is self-sufficient in energy
and water needs, housing electrical generation, water
desalinator and all of the equipment necessary to process oil
and gas
Type of Platform
Fixed Platform
One type of offshore platforms used for the production on
oil & gas
Built on concrete or steel legs anchored directly onto the
seabed
Supporting a deck with space for drilling rigs, production
facilities and crew quarters
Designed for very long term use
Various types of structure are used, steel jacket, concrete
caisson, floating steel and even floating concrete
Economically feasible for installation in water depths up to
about 1700 feet ( 520m )
Compliant Tower
Compliant tower are designed to sustain
significant lateral deflection and forces
This platform consist of slender flexible towers
and a pile foundation supporting a conventional
deck for drilling and production operation
Typically used in water depths ranging from 370
to 910 meters ( 1,210 to 2,990 ft )
Semi-submersible platform
A semi-submersible (semi-submerged ship) is a
specialized marine vessel.
Used in a number of specific offshore roles such as
offshore drilling rigs, safety vessels, oil production
platforms, and heavy lift cranes.
Design with good stability.
Can be moved from place to another place
Used in water depth from 60 to 3000m
These platform have hulls(columns and pontoons)

SPAR PLATFORM
Consists of a single tall floating cylinder hull, supporting a fixed
deck.
The hull is encircled with spiraling strakes to add stability.
The cylinder does not extend all the way to the seafloor, but
instead is tethered to the bottom by a series of cables and lines.
Large cylinder serves to stabilize the platform in the water and
allows for movement to absorb the force of potential hurricanes.
The bottom cylinder includes a blasting section with material that
weighs more than water, ensuring the center of gravity is located
below center of buoyancy.
Spar is large platform, used for water depth from 300 and up to
3000 meters.

Summary
Oil platform installation is depends on water
depth, size of well, range of the well and
environment
Oil rig and oil platform is a two different thing.
Commonly use platform is jack-up drill rig,
compliant tower and fixed platform.
