Preschoolers (ages 3-4 yrs. old)- Science/Math

Standard Statement: Use simple tools to extend investigation
Lesson Summary:
The students will collect different types of apples.
The students will sort the apples by size.
The students will use technology to gather data pertaining to apples color and taste preference.
Estimated Duration:
This lesson and activities will take about 2 hours. I will divide the lesson up into 3 days to cover all the content
area lasting anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes per day.
Commentary: I observed the students talking about the different colors of apples that were on the table that
matched some of the ones they had in their lunch. I informed the students that we were going to be exploring
about different types of apples for our lesson/activity in class.
Instructional Procedures:
The classroom has 12 students with 3 Adults (1 lead teacher, 2 Instructional assistants) The ratio is 4 students
per adult so that quality time is given to each student and that helps with instruction and allowance for student
success and achievement.
Day 1:
Creative Art will be implemented for 15 minutes
Concept: Different types of apples
Objective: Students will be able to draw 3 apple shapes
Description: Students may draw the apple the way they perceive an apple to be.
Literacy/ Language for 15 minutes.
Concept: Apples are different colors
Objective: Apples have sweet and sour tastes
Description: Students will describe how their apple taste
Day 2: Dramatic Play will be for 30 minutes

Concept: Farmers grow apples on a farm
Objective: Students will identify and compare types of apples
Description: Students will dress up as farmers and pretend to have picked the apples/ and customers and have a
table in the dramatic play area as a farm market where they can sell the apples( Math Domain)
Cognitive Activity for 15 minutes math/science
Concept: Counting of apples
Objective: Students will sort apples by colors and the count how many of each they have
Description: Students can add how many different colors of apples(math)
Day 3: Creative Movement for 15 minutes

Concept: Bobbing for apples in a plastic tub( because of illnesses and sanitary measures I will have students
fish for the apples by using a plastic spoon or net)
Objective: Students will be able to catch or fish out apples.
Description: Apples that are gathered will be put in a bowl for sensory activity
Sensory Activity for 30 minutes
Concept: Apples are crisp , crunchy and juicy

Objective: Students will tell how apples taste
Description: Apples will be cut into different shapes using plastic cookie cutters and the put into a bowl of jello
for students to explore with (science) and explain how it feels on their hands. The students will use laptops by
VTech to search for match it games/ activities about apples.
Pre-Assessment:
The Domain of Social and Emotional Development Strand: Self, Topic: Peer Interactions and Relationships,
Standard: Demonstrates socially competent behavior with peers. This domain was observed as well as the
Cognitive? General Knowledge under the common core .The students were able to group the apples by color
and size. The students also made a graph about the apples.
Scoring Guidelines: I would conduct a formal assessment by observing the students as they
participate in the activity of graphing to see if they have an understanding of comparison
Post-Assessment:
As the students do activities with the apples pertaining to the different content subjects I would have
conversations with them to see if they have comprehension about apples and the students could do an apple
window /sun catcher on their VTech lap tops and print them off to share with parents/ guardians
Scoring Guidelines:
This would not be applicable for my age group because children develop at different stages and I would
not pass or fail a preschoolers because they are unique and their identity and ideas are different. I would
not want to be responsible for putting out their light and creativity.
Differentiated Instructional Support

Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students: If I had a preschooler who was identified as Gifted or one with special needs I would ask for the
assistance of a professional who specializes in whatever the need may be and I would leave the use of
technology to their discretion providing I had obtained parental permission.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material: As stated above get professional assistance such as Therapists, counselors etc.

Homework Options and Home Connections

I would encourage Parental Involvement at home by making up take home packets for the students and for
those parents who may not have access to a computer at home or may not know how to use one I would send a
list of resources home to them so they may take classes and learn. I would also invite them to the classroom to
interact with their students and be available to answer any questions they may have.
