I. Course Overview
NUST Community Service Learning Course CSL-401 is offered to all NUST students. The
course comprises 1 credit hour of theoretical work (workshops and seminars) and 1 credit
hour of field projects. The field projects consists of minimum 30 hours, in which students
are supposed to complete at least two different projects. Students are expected to propose
projects either independently or at a philanthropist organization/location of their choice.
All field projects are to be undertaken after approval of respective Advisor/Co-Advisor.
Limited field project opportunities may be provided at NUST campus through NUST
Community Service Club on first-come-first-served basis.

1. Become aware of various areas of community service and relevant ongoing philanthropic activities in the community.
2. Develop a sense of responsibility, compassion and empathy towards the community.
3. Contribute to have a discernible impact on the community.

IV. Prerequisites and applicability


1. Final-year undergraduate students: compulsory by curriculum.
2. Postgraduate students: by voluntary participation.

To impart general awareness and knowledge along with social guidance to develop NUST
students into socially active citizens in line with NUST Community Service strategy of
having a discernible positive impact on society through active citizenry.

VII.Course Format
Course comprise a mix of 15 hours of learning workshops (5 or more seminars/workshops) and 30 hours of field projects (2 separate projects). 15 hours of workshops would
be conducted on various community service topics/areas on the campus. For 30 hours
of field projects, 2 projects of total 30 hours (project 1 of 10 hours is community service
focused and project 2 of 20 hours is development/ empowerment focused) are to be done
by the students. Students may choose any project idea from the list of ideas given in these
guidelines or propose an idea of their own, which may be undertaken as a field project,

after approval of the respective advisor. For every project done, students are to identify the
following:

Need of the project (why was it required by the community?)

Where was it accomplished (location)?

When was it accomplished (Date/Time/Duration)?

How was it done (Methodology/Process)?

What is the result/ outcome/impact of this work on the society/community?

What was the learning outcome for the student (out of the three expected outcomes
enlisted above under the heading Learning objectives and expected outcomes)?

For each field assignment, students are required to submit following (through LMS):

Project Plan Document.

Project Completion Report.

Two picture files for each project. Pictures must be taken to give idea of when, where
and how the project was done and who participated in it. Labels/text boxes may be
added to the pictures, answering the 6 questions listed above.
Best project nomination award form (optional: nomination of the best project is applicable to project 2). A 2minute video file of the project is to be submitted for such
nominations.

VIII. Grading
Since it is a non-GPA course, it does not increase the total number of credit hours for
CGPA of a program. Following grades would be allotted to the students: (detailed criteria
follows)
1.

Grade SSatisfactorily Completed: Students completing at least 80%-100% of the


course requirements satisfactorily.

2.

Grade PParticipation: Students completing 40%-79% of the course requirements.

3.

If a student does not complete even 40% of the requirements, he/she will be withdrawn from the course.

1. Every student involved in community service pledges not to lie, steal or cheat and
not to tolerate those who do the same.
2. Each community service student at all times displays honor and self-respect, dignity,
honesty, self-discipline, high sense of personal integrity, good self-image and selfesteem, compassion for others, spirit of sacrifice and obligation to the neglected and
the needy.
