Problems Involving Sets

INTRODUCTION:
The lesson in this module guides the students in solving
problems involving sets. It helps the students to have a deeper
understanding about sets. You will appreciate more the concepts of
sets and the use of Venn Diagrams as you work through the various
problems presented in his module.
TITLE:

Problem No More

OBJECTIVES:
This module aims to solve word problems involving sets using
Venn Diagram, apply set operations to solve a variety of word
problems and show diligence and patience in solving word problems.
PRE- TEST :
Solve the following basic word problems.
1. Let A and B be two finite sets such that n(A) = 30, n(B) = 38
and n(AUB) = 46, find n(A B).
2. Let A = { a, b, d, e }, B = { b, c, e, f } and C = { d, e, f, g }.
Find
a. (A B)
b. (B C)
c. A (B C)
d. A (B C)
3. Twenty stdents were surveyed, 10 students played
basketball, 8 students
played volleyball, and 3 students played both sports.
Represent the
problem using a Venn diagram.

4. If A = { 3,6,9 } and B = { 2,4,5,6 }, find A B using Venn

Diagram.
5. If C = { 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 } and D = { 1, 3, 5, 7 }, find C D
using Venn Diagram.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
A set is a collection of objects. The objects in the set are called
elements of the set. A set is well-defined if there is a way to determine
if an object belongs to the set or not. To indicate that we are
considering a set, the objects (or the description) are put inside a pair
of set braces, {}.
Problems involving sets can be solved by identifying the sets
involved the drawing a Venn Diagram to keep trail of the numbers in
the different regions of the diagram.
A Venn diagram is a drawing in which there is a rectangle to
represent the universe and closed figures (usually circles) inside the
rectangle to represent sets.

One way to use the diagram is to place the elements in the

diagram. To do this, we write/draw those items that are in the set
inside of the circle. Those items in the universe that are not in the set
go outside of the circle.
Sample Problem:

Forty Grade 7 students of Marcelo H. Del Pilar National High

School were interviewed to find out how many of them had been to the
Baguio City and to Davao City. Twenty-five students had been to Baguio
City and sixteen students had been to Davao City. Ten students had
visited both cities. Draw a Venn Diagram to find the number of
students who had been to:
a. Baguio City or Davao City
b. Davao City but not Baguio City
c. Only one of the two cities
d. Neither city

Solution:
Let B be the set of students who had been to Baguio City and Let
D be the set of students who had been to Davao City. Let the universal
set U be the set of Grade 7 students interviewed.
We can illustrate the information as;
|B| = 25

|D| = 16

|B D| =

10
Thus, the number of A only = 25

15

10

10
=
15
and B only = 16 10
=6
a.

The number of students who had been to Baguio City or

Davao City = 15 + 6 + 10 = 31
Davao City only = 6
Only one of the two cities = 15 + 6 = 21
Neither city = 40 31 = 9

b.
c.
d.
Activity

Solve the following problems

1. There are 20 cars in Robinsons Malolos parking area.
12 cars are diesel
7 cars are automatic

4 cars are automatic diesel

To find out how many cars are not automatic and not a
diesel, work through the following exercises. Mark the correct
region in the circle that corresponds to your answer.
a. Where do the 4 automatic diesels get marked on the
diagram?
b. If there are 12 diesels, how many diesels are not
automatic?
c. How many of the automatic cars are not diesel?
d. How many cars are not automatic and not a diesel?
2. Your mother buys 8 packs of Chicharon ni Mang Juan. All the
packs have salt or vinegar on them. Some have salt and
vinegar. There are 4 packs with salt and vinegar and one pack
with only vinegar. How many have salt only?

SUMMARY
The steps in solving problems about sets using Venn Diagram is
to identify first the sets involved then construct a Venn Diagram to
keep track of the numbers in the different regions of the diagram.
