Appendix 3 Equipment Suppliers
Appendix 3 Equipment Suppliers
Appendix 3 Equipment Suppliers
The number of suppliers of equipment that can be used for intensified processes is
rising. Suppliers include well-established manufacturers of compact heat exchangers. Several CHE suppliers listed also make HEX-reactors and/or microreactors.
There are now a number of dedicated PI equipment suppliers, who also have a role
in R&D. These include NiTech in the UK, IMM in Germany and many companies
in the USA. Other companies have been in the PI field for a number of years, without promoting their equipment under the PI banner.
Note: The lists below are not exhaustive and have been compiled from information
available to the authors at the time of writing. The listing of a supplier of goods
or services does not constitute an endorsement by the authors of either its product
or its competence. Neither does the omission of a supplier discriminate against its
competence.
In many cases, brief data are given after the organisation details, summarising
the PI-related activities of that organisation. Other data may of course be sought
via the websites that are identified in the vast majority of cases. The names and
addresses of other suppliers may be found in commercially available trade directories, (e.g. Compass Directory), University data sources, trade associations, or from
Web searches.

The Batch Model High Shear Rotor-Stator mixer design consists of a single stage
rotor that turns at high speed within a stationary stator. As the rotating blades pass
the stator, they mechanically shear the contents. The batch model can be either permanently mounted to a vessel or suspended over a vessel on a portable lift. The
mobile configuration offers the flexibilty to use a single mixer in multiple vessels. It
also allows the user to vary the position of the stator to process a variety of materials.

Their technology aims at controlling and actively manipulating nucleation and subsequent crystal growth behaviour. For instance, this technology has been applied to
increase sodium oxalate impurity removal from the process liquor at the Aughinish
Alumina refinery in Ireland. The existing process of recycling precipitated seed
to act as a precipitation initiator was subject to the constraint that crystals rapidly
become poisoned by other species present in the liquor and therefore could not be
recycled in great quantity. The ultrasound technology is essentially applied very
simply by bolting-on to the pipe.
