Summary
A.

This section will provide information regarding the evaluation

B.

Each section of the evaluation will be summarized in a clear succinct manner

Purpose of the evaluation

A.

This evaluation aims to measure the effectiveness of the project to implement the new middle school
math program at Deutsche Schule Kobe, specifically if students . The results of the evaluation will be
used to adjust and improve the program. The results will also be used to make decisions about including
IXL and Eureka Math into the elementary math curriculum from next year.

III.

Background information
A.

Since September, I have been piloting a math program with my combined Grade 6 & 7 class. I
have a total of five 7th graders and three 6th graders in this class. I am a curriculum designer and
Math/Science/Design teacher at a brand new middle school branching out of an established
elementary school in Japan.

B.

Our math program has three main components:

1.
2.
3.

Eureka Math curriculum-based lessons (Concept learning/Pattern investigation)

IXL (online drills with instant feedback, record keeping analysis, etc.)

Projects (building/construction projects applying concepts and skills)

C. Chart modelled after Table 1.1 (Boulmetis & Dutwin, 2011, 13)
D. Possible areas for Evaluation
Levels

IXL (drill practice)

Eureka Math
(conceptual learning)

Projects (authentic

Has this led to

better student

testing situations?

Has this led to deeper

Description of the evaluation study and result

A.

This evaluation will aim to study the effectiveness of curriculum delivery and content.

B.

Since I am the sole developer of this math program, I am the project designer and dont need to
interview anyone to identify objectives.

C.

The program objectives include:

1.

To build math confidence in Grade 6 and 7 students by increasing independence in classroom

activities

2.

To help students make strong connections between math skills and concepts by teaching math
in authentic, meaningful contexts

3.

To provide practical training in technology and scientific equipment

4.

To build confidence in test taking contexts

D. Methodology

V.

1.

Administer pre-unit interview and performance test

2.

Administer pre-unit self-concept questionnaire

3.

Administer post-unit interview and performance test

4.

Administer post-unit self-concept questionnaire

Results
A.

I will provide results by objective and in terms of the method applied to measure the success of that
criteria.

VI.

Discussion of the program and its results

A.

I will provide interpretations of whether the results indicate that objectives had been met in the
evaluation.

VII.

Conclusions and recommendations

A.

I will provide recommendations for changing and improving the program

B.

I will also provide a detailed recommendation meant to provide information for the math curriculum
coordinator of the elementary school for her decision of whether to include IXL and Eureka Math into the
math curriculum
