Water, air and suitable temperature are required for seed germination.

Water, air and suitable temperature.

Cooled boiled water was used to prevent air from dissolving and oil was used to prevent air from entering the test tube, to test if air is required for germination.

The condition for seed germination

Aim: To determine the conditions required for the germination of seeds

Problem statement: What conditions are required for a seed to germinate?

Hypothesis: A seed will germinate only if there is air, water and suitable temperature.

Variable:
(a) Manipulated Variable: conditions for germination.
(b) Responding Variable: Germination of seeds
(c) Constant variable: Type of seeds

Material and apparatus: Seeds, oil, cotton wool, cooled boiled water, labelling paper, test tubes,
refrigerator, test tube rack

Procedure:

Kept in cupboard

1 Set up the apparatus as shown in the diagram.

2 Place the test tubes labelled A, B and C in the laboratory , the test tube labelled D in the
Refrigerator and test tube labelled E in the cupboard.
3 Observe and record the germination of the seeds after five days.

1. The testa breaks, the radicle grows.

Fourth day

3. The cotyledon is pushed upwards

4. The plumule grows out from the cotyledon

Fifth day

5. The stem grows longer and the plumule forms green Leaves. The cotyledon becomes smaller
and finally falls off.
Discussion:
1. The conditions required for the germination of seeds are water, air and suitable temperature.
2. Test tube A acts as a control
3. The following substances are used in test tube C because:
a) The cooled boiled water is used because the cooled boiled water does not contain air.
b) Oil is used to prevent air from dissolving in the cooled boiled water.
4. In the dark the seeds will germinate because seeds do not require light for germination.
Conclusion:
The hypothesis is _accepted_.Water, air and suitable temperature are required for the germination of
seeds.
