TITLE

The university has five campuses in

Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings.
Each location has a unique character
but wherever youre based, youll be
studying by the sea. Our climate tends
to be warmer than other parts of the
UK, and all our campuses have a great
sense of community and a welcoming
atmosphere.

BRIGHTON
Our English language courses are based
in Brighton, the UKs liveliest seaside city
which offers an exciting mix of shops,
restaurants, clubs and theatres.

02 www.brighton.ac.uk/learnenglish

The Brighton Language Institute is located

on the Falmer campus, three miles from
the city centre and surrounded by beautiful
countryside. A trip by train to London
from Brighton takes less than an hour and
Gatwick airport is only 30 minutes away,
linking you to mainland Europe and the
rest of the world.

SHOPPING AND EATING

Brighton is a shoppers paradise - as well
as all the familiar high-street names around
the city centre, there are many stylish
independent shops in The Lanes. The
North Laine is home to quirky specialist
shops, selling everything from secondhand
records and clothing to furniture and
organic foods.

With over 400 cafes and restaurants to

choose from, there is plenty of choice.
Whether you like Indian or Greek, Mexican
or Thai food, burgers, vegetarian or
seaside fish and chips, youll find it here.
Relax with the newspapers and a coffee in
one of the North Laine cafes.

ENTERTAINMENT AND
SOCIALISING
Social entertainment is an important part
of your university experience and the
University of Brighton Students Union
provides a year-round programme of
events including club nights, karaoke and
cinema events.

especially for international and EU
students. The International Students
Society (ISS) is the largest and organises
events and social activities throughout the
academic year. All international and EU
students are automatic members of the
International Students Society and receive
regular invitations and updates. Examples
of past events are a celebration for
Diwali, Hanukah and Chinese New Year, a
Thanksgiving meal, Christmas dinner and
various trips to places of interest in the UK
such as London, Bath and Oxford.
The Brighton Language Institute also
generally offers a leisure activity once per
week and the cost of this is usually under
10.
If youre a music lover Brighton has it all.
The venue for classical, jazz and world
music is the Brighton Dome, while the
Brighton Centre stages major rock and
pop concerts and theres live music in
clubs and pubs around the city. In the
summer there are also concerts and
festivals in the citys parks and beachfront.

The highlight of the citys cultural year is

the Brighton Festival, Englands biggest
arts festival that showcases arts and
performance from around the world.
There are many theatres across Brighton
that offer everything from pre-London
productions to the avant-garde.
Visual art is everywhere, from sculptures
on the seafront to major exhibitions to
street art. There is also a beachfront
artists quarter and many smaller galleries
to explore.

SPORT AND EXERCISE

Whether you take your sport seriously
or just want to keep fit, Brighton offers

Class organisation
You will study in groups of up to 16

learning techniqueswe offer blended
learning that combines taught classes
with online tutor contact, peer discussion
and study. This is accomplished
through our virtual learning environment
Studentcentral, and excellent facilities
and learning resources such as our Open
Learning Centre.
All our courses in English for Academic
Purposes follow a similar format:
You will have 20 hours of tuition per week
with some afternoons free for guided
self-study. Lessons normally take place
between 9.30 and 13.00, Monday to
Friday with additional afternoon lessons
between 14.00 and 16.00 on two days of

masters course.

04 www.brighton.ac.uk/learnenglish

The syllabuses for these courses are

based on a series of up to three academic
stages (depending on your language level
at entry point).
Develop Your English is the first of three
stages - you will follow an academic
programme focused on general and
academic English in order to provide you
with a strong foundation for later stages;
In the second stage, Extend Your English,
you will continue studying general English
and English for academic purposes.
The final stage, Consolidate Your English,
is a comprehensive high-level programme
of academic English. The language
descriptors of all courses are mapped
against the Common European Framework
(CEFR) for languages and point of entry is
determined by your level of English at the
start.
Course assessment
Successful completion of the assessments
at the end of each stage allows
progression to the next stage. Successful
completion of the assessments for the
final stage Consolidate Your English, will

Ching-Ting Lin

Extended Masters
The Extended Masters course has
improved my English language,
my reading speed and academic
vocabulary. In addition, I have
learnt more about how to write an
academic essay and how to find the
articles and journals to support my
ideas. Before I came to England I
worried about my English ability,
but this course gave me the self
confidence to go on to the masters
programme.
Brighton is a brilliant place to study
and live. For instance, the shopping
centres, the beautiful seaside,
the bars and the hotels offer
opportunities to work and learn
something new. I really enjoyed
every moment of this course and
indeed I have made the correct
choice. I am sure I am now prepared
to go on to the master programme.

TAILOR-MADE COURSES

Millie and Sabrina

from China
Chinese teachers bespoke group
course
The most interesting thing about
our classes here is the atmosphere;
its so active and everybody gets
involved in the activities. We love it
so much!
For well over a decade, we have
successfully delivered a range of courses
covering areas such as English language
study, English teacher training, business
and academic English, and British culture
and conventions.
We have created tailor-made programmes
for groups from a wide range of countries
including Germany, France, Greece and
Russia, as well as from China, the Ivory
Coast, Tunisia and Japan. Our clients
include academic staff and students from
international partner universities as well
as groups from private companies and
government organisations.
We can work closely with you to design
programmes that meet your specific
needsthis can include cultural trips and
accommodation. We are experienced in
organising guided trips to London, Oxford,
Cambridge, Windsor, Eton and Canterbury.

Below are some examples of the types of

courses we have arranged:
English with teaching methodology
for groups of practising international
teachers.
Language teaching methodology
for groups of practising UK-based
teachers.
Specialist language and culture
trainingfor businesses or other groups
in French, German, Spanish, Chinese,
Arabic or Japanese.
Creative writingfor groups of
academics, writers and business
communicators.
Executive Englishfor groups of
international business professionals.
English for the caring professionsfor
groups of healthcare professionals
working in the UK, for whom English is a
second language.

groups of managerial or support staff
from international universities.

The teachers at the Brighton

Language Institute have taught
us how to teach our students in a
quicker and more effective way, I
think that is the point Ill take with
me to China. In my opinion, Im an
excellent teacher in China, and
now I want to be the best teacher
in China because Ive learned a
lot in the University of Brightons
Language Institute.
Brighton is such a fantastic city
and the climate here maybe the
best in the south of England. The
University of Brighton is full of
friendly atmosphere and you can
meet a lot of friendly people here
and also learn a lot.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT

Samuel Faure
from France
University of Brighton graduate
from Brighton Language Institute
I have really appreciated the
experience of living in Brighton
and studying at the university. I
have been charmed by Brighton
itself with its architecture, shops,
entertainment and diversity. Its
location is also perfect because
it is a seaside town but close to
the countryside, London and
international airports.

English language support continues in

your first year of degree study.
If you start a degree course at the
University of Brighton you will continue to
receive high-quality language support in
your first year of academic study. This is
provided by our English language support
programme which offers a series of
term-time lectures, classes and tutorials
and is available to all students whose first
language is not English.

The English language support programme

is free of charge and is designed to
consolidate and develop your existing
language skills to help you complete your
day-to-day academic tasks.
The programme includes the following:
Intensive English study weekends at the
start of the academic year.
Academic support drop-in tutorials.
Academic writing and style classes.
An online writing advisory service.

which has helped me to practice
my English and provide me with
the skills for living and studying in
the UK.

The UK Home Office requires nonEU prospective students to provide

evidence that they have met the
language requirement through a Secure
English Language Test (SELT), with an
approved test provider. This evidence
is required before we can issue you
with a Confirmation of Acceptance of
Studies (CAS number). Our degree
courses are delivered and assessed in
English. The UK Home Office and the
university will need you to meet the
English language requirements for your
chosen course. Please check individual
course descriptions to confirm the English
language entry requirements that apply
to you.

Table of equivalencies
The table above shows English language
qualifications that we will consider as an
alternative to IELTS. The table should be
considered as a guide to popular English
language examinations. If you have any
other English language qualification, please
contact us to see if you would be eligible
for one of our courses.
English language testing
Staff at the Brighton Language Institute
can deliver the University of Brightons
own English language test, either in your
own country on specific dates or at the
university in the UK. The test is designed
for students who have either already
applied, or for students who are intending
to apply to a University of Brighton degree
course.

The results of the test can be used in a

number of ways:
Assessing whether you are eligible for
direct entry on to a Brighton degree
course without the need to study
English language beforehand.
Assessing whether you are eligible for
the 12 or 8 week Extended Masters
programme.
Providing you with an indication of
your current language level so that
you can be better prepared to follow a
study plan for taking a Secure English
Language Test (SELT).
Allowing you an opportunity to meet
Brighton Language Institute staff to ask
any questions directly about English
language pathway programmes, or
language study options.
