Bulk Breeding

The bulk breeding method handles plant generations by harvesting F2 and subsequent generations in bulk to grow the next generation. At the end of the bulking period, individual plant selection and evaluation is conducted similar to the pedigree method. The bulk method involves crossing parental lines, growing subsequent generations F1 through F6 in bulk, selecting superior phenotypes from F7 onward, conducting yield trials from F10-F12, and multiplying the seed of released varieties for distribution. The bulk method is simple, inexpensive, and effective for natural selection, but requires more time and does not allow tracing progeny back to parents.

BULK BREEDING

Definition
It is a method which can handle segregating generations, in which F 2 and
subsequent generations are harvested in bulk to grow the next generation. At
the end of bulking period, individual plant selection and evaluation is carried out
in the similar fashion as in the pedigree method.

Procedure for Bulk Method


Bulk method of plant breeding completes in following main steps.
1) Hybridization:
Parents are selected according to the objective of the breeding programme and
crossed.
2) F1 Generation:
The F1 generation ( 10 to 25 F1) is space planted and harvested in bulk.
3) F2-F6 Generation:
F2 to F6 generations are planted at commercial seed rate and spacing. These
generations are harvested in bulk. During these generations the population size
should be as possible, preferably 30 to 50 thousand plants should be grown in
each generation.
4) F7 Generation:
About 30 50 thousand plants are space planted and out of this only 1000 to
5000 plants with superior phenotypes are selected and their seeds harvested
separately. Selection is made on the basis of phenotypes of plants, grain
characteristics etc.
5) F8 Generation:
Individual plant progenies are grown in single or multi row plots. Most of the
progenies would be homozygous and are harvested in bulk. Weak and inferior
progenies are rejected and only 100- 300 individual plant progenies with
desirable characters are selected.
6) F9 Generation:
Preliminary yield trial is conducted along with standard variety as check. The
evaluation of progeny is done for important desirable characteristics. Quality test
may be conducted to reject the undesirable progenies.
7) F10- F12 Generation:
Replicated yield trails are conducted at several locations using standard
commercial varieties as check. The lines are evaluated for important agronomic
characteristics. If lines are superior to the standard check, released as new
varieties.

8) F13 Generation:
Seed multiplication of the newly released variety for distribution to the farmers.

Advantages

Simple and inexpensive


Little record keeping.
Easy to handle populations as harvest in bulk.
Natural selection is effective, possible to carry out artificial selection if
required.
We can wait for opportunity to carry out selection. Selection for some
environment dependent characteristics like disease resistance, lodging
resistance can be carried out when environment is favorable for disease
epidemic and severe lodging. Till that year the bulk can be maintained
easily.

Disadvantages

Demerits of bulk method are given here


Requires more time duration to develop new variety
Pedigree record is not maintained, so we cannot trace back progeny to the
parent plant.
Not suitable method for greenhouses
Large number of progenies has to be selected at the end of bulking period.
Natural selection may also work against desirable traits.
Not much scope for skills
Bulk method is particularly suited to small grain crop plants
Maximum productivity is established in F2 generation of method
No recombination occurrence among superior lines

Applications of Bulk Method

Homozygous lines can be isolated in less time, automatic increase in


homozygosity up to F6 or F8generation after this individual plant selection
can be carried out.
Natural selection may improve considered character (yield), with minimum
expenses.
Suitable for crops which are generally planted at high planting densities,
e.g. small grain crops.
