    Life of Jose Corazon de Jesus

    A splendid morning to the young man and ladies in front of me, especially to our
    ever dearest Dr. Castillo, my discussion is all about the life of Jose Corazon de Jesus.
    Jose Corazon de Jesus, popularly known as Batute, though not considerably
    younger than either Gatmaitan or Ramos created his own generation with his book
    of poem. He was born on November 22, 1896 at Santa Cruz Manila. He was
    christened Jose Cecilio de Jesus but dropped and replaced it later with the Spanish
    name Corazon which means heart because it best describes his character.
    One of his greatest work is Mga Gintong Dahon which became famous because of
    its risky and non traditional themes such as passion-slaying, grief-induced insanity,
    and lovers suicide.
    He combined in himself the attributes of a flashy bard and lover which captivate
    audiences in the 1920s whenever he declaimed his extravagantly passionate love
    poems.
    He is also a wise and senseful critic. As a columnist for Taliba, he commented in
    verse on the social and political scene and the constant encounter with the day to
    day realities in Manila served to develop the serious vein in his poetry. Strong anticolonial streak and a deep-felt sympathy for victims of social injustice characterized
    his mature poetry.
    He also retold the history of the Philippines under Spain, the revolution that its rule
    and the coming of the U.S. in disguise of friendship to take over from Spain. It was
    in the awit form, consisted of 443 Stanzas. It was about the daughters of Haring
    Pilipino and Reyna Malaya namely Luningning, Bituin and Mandiwa who fell victims
    to the scheme of Haring Iberio who represented Spain and Haring Samuel who
    represented US.
    He also was hailed as the King of versified debate after bested Collantes until his
    death.
    Batute was married to Asuncion Lacdan. They have three kids namely, Teresa, Jose
    Corazon Jr. and Rogelio. He died on May 26, 1932 at the age of 35 because of Ulcer.
    His heart was donated in the government museum until it was buried with his
    mother. Nevertheless, Jose Corazon de Jesus clinched the stature of a major artist
    among Filipino poets because of his substantial works.
