OMEGA: Calculatus

MECHANICS

NATURE OF THE CONTEST


A Calculatus is a contest sponsored by the Adamson University Electronics
Engineering Students Society (AUECESS). Its primary objective is to promote
scholastic excellence and competency in the field of electronics, general and
applied sciences, and mathematics.
B The contest shall be divided into 2 parts: Elimination, and Final round
C This is a pair quiz bee. 2 members compose each team. Sixteen (16) teams are
expected to join this activity.
D Open to all bona fide 2nd to 5th year ELECTRONICS NGINEERING students of
Adamson University.
E Each team shall consist of student from second year, third year, fourth year or
fifth year.
F The contest shall be divided into the following categories:
Algebra
Trigonometry
Differential Calculus
Integral Calculus
Differential Equations
Physics
Chemistry
Strength of Materials
Engineering Mechanics
General Knowledge

PROCEDURE
Elimination Round
A This round will test the luck and intellect of the participants. Only one
participant of each group will approach the facilitator and pick a question
inside the box.
B Then the participant will go back to their respective seat and answer the
question as a group.
C The participants will answer the questions with no calculator but only with the
given pen and paper.

D The 30 questions inside the box are mainly easy questions.


E Only one of the participant each group may approach the facilitator and show
their answers. Each question corresponds to 1 point.
F This round will only end at the given time limit one (1) hour.
G The TOP 8 group to complete 10 correct answers will proceed to the final
round.
Final Round
A. The final round will follow the rules of STAR SYSTEM. In star system, teams will
have the chance to double their score on a certain question by putting a STAR in their
final answers. If the STARRED answer is correct the teams who put stars on their
answers will receive doubled points, but if the starred answer is INCORRECT the
team would receive a deduction of one (1) point.
B. Each contestant shall be provided with official answer sheets and marker, where they will
write their answer for each questions.
C. The final round is divided into three categories. These are:
a. Difficult

b. Very Difficult

In this round, there will be ten (10) questions that are purely concepts.
The contestants will do the typical raise-your-board type of answering.
Each team is allowed to use up to THREE STARS only.
In this round, there will be ten (10) questions.
The contestants will do the typical raise-your-board type of answering.
Questions will be 50% concepts and 50 % problem-solving.
For problem solving questions, if applicable, answers must be expressed
with four (4) decimal places without truncation.
Each team is allowed to use up to THREE STARS only.

c. Super Difficult
In this round, there will be fifteen (15) questions.
The contestants will do the typical raise-your-board type of answering.
Questions are categorical can be of any category (concept or problemsolving).
General Knowledge will be included as a category on this round.
Only one member of the team will be given the right to answer in each
question.
Eight (8) chairs will be placed in front. No one will be allowed to proceed to
their respective chairs unless told by the quizmaster.
Each team will send one representative in front before the quizmaster
announces the category.
For problem solving questions, if applicable, answers must be expressed with
four (4) decimal places without truncation.
Teams are NOT ALLOWED to have the same player in CONSECUTIVE
questions. The members should take turns in sending their representatives.

Each team is allowed to use up to FIVE STARS only.


d. Time allotment:

Easy
Moderate
Hard

15 seconds per question


15 seconds for concepts and 45 seconds for problem solving
20 seconds for concepts and 120 seconds for problem solving

D. The Quizmaster will read each question twice. After the second reading, the quizmaster shall
say START, after which the timer will start counting down the time allotted for the question.
All contestants must finalize their answer before the Quizmaster says TIMES UP.
Notes: The Arbiters or Proctors will collect all answer sheets right after the allotted time for answering
has finished. Answer sheets will be submitted to the Judges for verification and decision. The
Quizmaster will announce the contestants, as decided by the Judges, who among the participants got
the correct answer, incorrect answer and has no answer with corresponding credits.
E. The following will be considered as incorrect answer:
a. An answer with no units or incorrect units (when required).
b. Failure to raise the board on time.
c. An answer not in simplest form.
F. Scoring System

Difficult
a. Each question is worth 5 points. If the STARRED answer is correct the teams who
put stars on their answers will receive doubled points, but if the starred answer is
INCORRECT the team would receive a deduction of one (1) point.
b. Zero point will be given for unanswered questions and for wrong answers with no
star.
c. Total scores in this round will be added to the next round.

Very Difficult
a. Each concept question is worth 5 points while problem solving is worth 10 points. If
the STARRED answer is correct the teams who put stars on their answers will receive
doubled points, but if the starred answer is INCORRECT the team would receive a
deduction of one (1) point.
b. Zero point will be given for unanswered questions and for wrong answers with no
star.
c. Top five (5) teams with highestCOMBINED SCORES from DIFFICULT AND
VERY DIFFICULT will proceed to Super Difficult round. Only five should qualify
for the next round. In case of any ties, do-or-die questions will be asked until the tie
is broken.
d. After this round, scores will be set back to zero.

Super Difficult

a. Each concept question is worth 10 points while problem solving is worth 15 points. If
the STARRED answer is correct the teams who put stars on their answers will receive
doubled points, but if the starred answer is INCORRECT the team would receive a
deduction of one (1) point.
b. Zero point will be given for unanswered questions and for wrong answers with no
star.
c. Score of each member of the teams will be summed.
d. In case of any ties, do-or-die questions will be asked until the tie is broken.
e. The team with the highest score will be hailed as the CHAMPION.
G. Protest and clarifications
a. Any protest on certain question may be entertained only before the start of the succeeding
question.
b. Only the contestants are allowed to protest, these protests should be directed to the judges.
c. Once a final decision has been reached, this decision is final and non-appealable.

III

PRIZES and AWARDS


A The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of the O-MEGA (Gearing-up the Imaginative learning and
excellency of ECE students) receive certificate, medals, and cash prize.
B The 4th and 5th placer will receive certificate of recognition.
C All participants shall receive certificate of participation.
