BIOLOGY QUIZ BOWL
GENERAL MECHANICS AND GUIDELINES
1. The contest is open to all bonafide BS Biology students of Bicol University. 2. Each year level can have one (1) to three (3) teams comprising three (3) students of any bloc. 3. The quiz contest will cover General Biology and some of the basic concepts of its branches. 4. Strictly no gadgets (cellphones, tablets, or any other electronic communication devices) are allowed during the competition proper. If any member of the representative team is found to have a device in his/her possession during the contest proper, his/her team is automatically disqualified from the contest. 5. Upon registration, the participants must submit the names of the members comprising their representative team/s. 6. The quiz contest will comprise four (4) rounds namely Relay Exam Round, Easy Round, Average Round and Difficult Round. The first round (Relay Exam Round) will be a team relay wherein each team will be given a 50-item exam that will be answered one member at a time. The subsequent rounds (Easy, Average and Difficult Rounds) will be taken as a group. 7. All points collected from each round will be added to know the winners of the contest. 8. The winners will receive certificates and respective points for their year levels.
QUIZ BOWL MECHANICS
1. A maximum of three teams per year level and three contestants per team are allowed to compete in the contest. No substitutions to the contestants will be allowed after registration. 2. Before the start of the competition proper, the quiz master will perform a roll call of all confirmed teams. Teams which are not called/have failed to confirm with the contest secretariat will not be allowed to join the competition. 3. The contest will have four (4) rounds: Relay Exam Round, Easy Round, Average Round and Difficult Round. 4. For the Relay Exam Round, each team will be given a 50-item questionnaire and will be answered like a relay one at a time. Each member will answer as many questions as he/she can for fifteen (15) minutes. When the buzzer rings after the first fifteen (15) minutes, the first member shall give it to the second designated member. After another fifteen (15) minutes, the questionnaire will be given to the third and last member wherein he/she will submit the answer sheet, finished or unfinished, to the assigned proctor after the last fifteen (fifteen) minutes. Coaching between members during this round is not allowed and will result to the invalidity of their answers. Official scratch papers and pens will be provided. Each member should have their own scientific calculator. No borrowing will strictly be followed. The score of the exam will be added to the final score of the team. 5. For the subsequent rounds which will be taken as a group, each question will have this sequence: a. The quiz master will state the question number and read the question body twice. The question will also be projected on-screen. The timer will start after the quiz master says go. b. Each team will write their answer on the provided answer board which will only be given after the quiz master says go. b. A buzzer will be rung at the end of the timer, and the quiz master will say time is up. Each team should stop writing on their boards at that point and give the answer board to the teams respective proctor. Failure to do so will invalidate the teams answer for that question. c. The quiz master will announce the correct answer for the question. The answer will also be projected on-screen. After each answer has been revealed, the quiz masters will ask for any point of inquiry or clarification. The judges will determine if the answer will be considered correct or wrong based strictly on the references indicated. The decisions of the judges are final and clarifications after which will not be entertained. Assigned proctors will then check each teams answer board to determine if their answer is correct. The proctor will raise a colored flag to indicate if the answer is: i. Correct GREEN ii. Wrong RED iii. No Answer YELLOW d. The quiz master will perform a roll call of each team and will say if the teams answer is correct, wrong or no answer. The equivalent points which the team earned will then be listed onto the score board. e. After the team is called, the proctors will also be allowed to lower their flags and erase the answers on the answer board. 6. For the Easy Round: a. There will be fifteen (15) items for this round. b. A correct answer will accumulate two (2) points and no penalty for wrong and no answers. c. For this round, multiple choice questions with four options each (labeled A, B, C, and D) will be given. d. Answers should be written in capital letters.
e. The team will be given thirty (30) seconds to answer.
7. For the Average Round: a. There will be ten (10) items for this round. b. A correct answer will accumulate five (5) points, negative two (-2) for wrong and negative one (-1) for no answer. c. For this round, identification questions will be given. d. Misspelled answers are considered incorrect. e. Use of abbreviations and/or acronyms will not be allowed. f. The team will be given sixty (60) seconds to answer. 8. For the Difficult Round: a. There will be ten (10) items for this round. b. A correct answer will accumulate ten (10) points, negative two (-5) for wrong and negative one (-3) for no answer. c. For this round, identification and application questions will be given. d. Misspelled answers are considered incorrect. e. Use of abbreviations and/or acronyms will not be allowed. f. The team will be given ninety (90) seconds to answer. 9. Late answer sheets and boards will be considered invalid. 10.Strictly no cheating and no coaching. Any form of coaching from the audience will strictly be prohibited. First offense will constitute to the calling of attention of the school and second offense will result to the disqualification of the schools representative team. 11.At the end of all rounds, the top three teams will be declared as the winners Champion, First runner-up Second runner-up and Third Runner-up. 12.In case of a tie, a tie-breaker question will be given to the tied teams. The first team to score an advantage over the other teams wins.
