TUTORIAL 3 of CHAPTER 3

Targets of Tutorial 3:
By the end of this tutorial, students should able:
i. To calculate the central tendency measurements, i.e. Mean, Median, and Mode.
ii. To calculate the variation measurement, i.e. Variance, and Standard Deviation.
iii. To apply Chebyshevs Theorem and Empirical Rule correctly.

1) Find the mode, mean, median, variance, and standard deviation for the following data set and
frequency distribution for the population below.

a) 5, 6, 6, 8, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 17

b) 148, 153, 156, 157, 160
c)
Number 10 11 12 13 14 15
Frequency 4 6 13 18 7 5

d)
x 1 2 3 4 5 6
f 4 5 8 10 17 5

e)
Class 04 59 10 14 15 19 20 24 25 29
Frequency 2 6 7 9 8 4

2) A car park attendant counted the number of people on each car entering a car park between
7.30am to 9.00am and his results are summarized in the following frequency distribution.

Number of people 1 2 3 4 5
Number of cars 41 33 18 6 2

Calculate the mean, mode and median number of people per car entering the car park.

3) The following sample data have mode 4 and mean 6.5.

5, 3, 12, 4, a, (2a+b), 7, 9, 8, 2

a) Find values of a and b.

b) Find the median of these data.
c) Calculate the standard deviation.

4) Each student in a small Higher Education College sat the same examination. The marks were
recorded and the following grouped frequency distribution is constructed

Marks Frequency

1 10 3

11 20 14

21 30 40

31 40 90

41 50 103

51 60 90

61 70 74

71 80 51

81 90 25

91 100 10

a) Construct a histogram and frequency polygon for the distribution above.

b) Given comment to your graph in (a).
c) Calculate the mean, mode, and median for the distribution.
d) Calculate the variance and standard deviation of the distribution.

5) Two hundred army recruits have the following heights.

Height (cm) Number of recruits

155 159 10

160 164 30

165 169 52

170 174 58

175 179 38

180 184 12

a) Draw a cumulative frequency curve on graph paper for the data given n the table.
b) Use your curve to estimate:
i) The lower quartile,
ii) The median,
iii) The upper quartile,
iv) The percentage of recruits whose heights are less than 161.5cm.

6) The average score on an English final examination was 85, with standard deviation of 5; the
average score on a History final examination was 110, with a standard deviation of 8. Which
class was more variable?

7) The average delivery charge for a refrigerator is RM 32. The standard deviation is RM 3.
Find the range of delivery charges that will contain 95% of the data values. Assume that the
distribution is normal.

8) Using Chebyshevs Theorem, solve the following problems for a distribution with a mean
of 80 and standard deviation of 10.

a) At least what percentage of the values that will fall between 60 and 100?
b) At least what percentage of the values that will fall between 65 and 95?
