1. General properties of gravity

(a) What is a unique aspect of the gravitational force among the fundamental inter-
actions?
(b) Find the ratio of gravitational to electrostatic force between the proton and elec-
tron in the ground state of a Hydrogen atom.

2. A free particle is moving in an inertial frame with coordinates (x, y, z) in the xy-plane
on a trajectory x = v t, y = d, where the displacement d and velocity v are constant
in time. Consider a rotating frame (x0 , y 0 , z 0 ) with a constant angular velocity about
a common z-axis.

(a) What are the equations of motion in the rotating frame?

(b) Show that the solution x = v t and y = d satisfy these equation of motion.
(c) Sketch the trajectory of the particle in the x0 y 0 -plane

3. Consider a reference frame S 0 which has a uniform acceleration with respect to an

inertial frame S.

(a) What are the Newtons laws in the accelerating frame?

(b) Is the form of Newtons laws of motion in S 0 invariant compared to their form in
S?

4. In the 1850s, Leon Foucault hung a 67 m long pendulum from the dome of the Pantheon
in Paris. The bob can move freely in any direction. As the pendulum swings back and
forth, the plane of motion precesses slowly about the vertical. This precession is a
result of the earths rotation. This was the first direct evidence of the earths rotation.
Consider
q a pendulum with a mass m (i.e. mass of the bob), length l and frequency
= g/l. Using polar coordinates (r, ) the position of the bob in the horizontal
plane, is described by r = r0 sin t, where r0 is the amplitude of the motion.

(a) Show that the Coriolis force is given by

F~ = 2m sin r ~e
in which is the angular velocity of the Earth and is the latitude of the location
on the Earth.
(b) Write down the tangential equation of motion using, F = m a .
(c) Show that if = constant is used as a solution for the tangential equation of
motion, the time period T for the pendulum to precess around is T = 24 h/sin .
What will be the value of T at Hamburg, at the poles and the equator?
