CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Setting
TITLE:
I. INTRODUCTION:
This thesis is about the importance of spiritual retreats on ones
character development as perceived by Divine Light Academys selected Grade 10
students. This chapter discusses the introduction, the research problems, our various
hypotheses, the scope and delimitation and the significance of the study. This will be
the basis of the data that shall be collected in the next chapters.
BACKGROUND:
The study aims to investigate the importance of spiritual retreats in Divine Light
Academys Selected Grade 10 students development of character during the school
year 2016-2017.
Specific Questions:
IV. A. HYPOTHESIS:
H0: The students do not think that retreats are necessary in terms of development of
character.
H0: The students do not observe the schools core values a week after the retreat.
H0: The students do not think that retreat helps them to develop the schools core
values (L.I.G.H.T.).
B. ASSUMPTION:
The retreat helped the selected Grade 10 students who attended the retreat
tremendously. It helped them enlighten their faith. They felt closer to God and more
positive about themselves and their self-concept. It helped them open up and express
their true feelings better.
The selected Grade 10 students will honestly and seriously answer all the
questions in our questionnaire.
The study will only focus on the students of Grade 10 because it is the time
where activities like retreat have a big impact on their way of living. We will only focus
on one level because other high school levels will have different retreat themes. An
additional delimitation is that not all of the respondents will have the same change and
perception as others do. The result of the study should not be looked as the direct
reason and answer to the retreats effect on ones character.
VI. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK:
Retreat defined as definite time (from a few hours in length to a month) spent away
from one's normal life for the purpose of reconnecting, usually in prayer, with God
Core values-are the guiding principles that dictate behavior and action.
God-centeredness- making decisions from based upon that which pleases or displeases
God.
I. RELATED LITERATURE
A. FOREIGN
Foreign Literature
According to Meger 2015) who was a dean and was interviewed for
the article Building character for change, the high school retreat will
encourage students to create a more positive school community by
engaging them in a variety of activities meant to build students
empathy and perspective. It means that retreat has an impact on the
behavior of students as it encourages them to become more ideal
Christians through different activities that connect to their own realization
that bridges to their development or change. Mrs. Meger had also cited
that the retreat had deeply impacted the students and she hope for a
change.
B. LOCAL
Local Literature:
Retreat is a sacred act to clear the mind, open the heart and
revitalize the spirit within the confines of the body (Villariba, 2011).
Retreats rebuild the spirit and enlighten the mind. It clears our mind
from worries. It helps students know their essence, values and beliefs.
All of the articles we found talked about retreat prior to the development of
character of the students who attend. They gave the reason on how this
development of character takes place and what kind of possible changes and
development that could happen to these students. They are also in a positive
light in which it is commonly said that spiritual retreats enlightens the students
who attend in it. These related literature justifies that our study is credible
through giving some positive outcome which are related to the students
character development such as retreats are meant to build empathy,
perspective, enlightenment and to know themselves better like their essence,
value and beliefs.
CHAPTER 3
Methodology
This chapter aims to present the methods and procedures used in our study. The
respondents, selected grade 10 students, the validation of the instruments, data
gathering and statistics used. It is our plan on how to write, present and collect the data
used to solve our research problems.
3. Both the cover letter and the questionnaire were approved by the thesis teacher, Ms.
Cindy Evangelista and the thesis adviser, Mr. Richard Capulong.
4. The questionnaire was distributed to the selected Grade 10 students for them to
answer.
5. The data gathered were tallied in order to answer the studys specific questions.

The students think that retreat helps them to develop the schools core
values or L.I.G.H.T.
III. RECOMMENDATIONS:
This study serves as a reference or guideline for students, parents, teachers and
future researchers. The researchers would like to recommend this study to:
First, students who wish to know the relevancy of retreat to their own character
development.
Second, to parents who are deliberating whether the expense of retreat is
worth it in connection to the character development of their child.
And last, for teachers who facilitate retreats to know whether their methods are
relevant to the character development of their students and to improve their
program in order for the students to develop the core value of Total
Commitment to Excellence.
This study might help the future researchers in our school and outside, to
complete their own study that may regard retreat as well.
