Advanced Cylinder Configuration

The cylinder configuration screen is used to set-up the options available on the selected cylinder. These options
include unloaders, valves, valve spacers, cylinder action, cylinder placement, etc. The majority of the options are
chosen by double clicking on the item of interest.

Click on the shortcut icon in the upper corner of the cylinder graphic to access the cylinder configuration window,
for both the detail screen and options screen.

Options Tab

Options tab - please see the "Compressor Options" section for information. Cylinder options can be accessed from
both the Cylinder Configuration window or the Compressor Options window.

Right Click Menu

Select Cylinder - please see the "Cylinder Selection" section for information.

Cylinder Options - please see the "Cylinder Options" section for information.

Customize Cylinder - please see the "Customize Cylinder" section for information.

Blank Throw - please see the "Blank Throw" section for information.

View data sheet - please see the "Cylinder Data Sheet" section for information.

Drawings - please see the "Drawings" section for information.

Gas Passage Data - please see the "Gas Passage Data" section for information.

Adjacent Restrictions - lists those cylinder that are not allowed next to the cylinder chosen.

Guide Deflection - please see the "Guide Deflection" section for information.

Rod Load Chart - Prints a rod load chart for the cylinder. This is based upon the cylinder RDP and the specific gas
mole weight used in the performance program.

Hydrotest Charts - Provides a link to existing hydrotest charts. The cylinder must have a serial number defined.

Drop-Down Menus

Placement - the center menu allows the user to place the cylinder on the proper stage and service for the
application.

Action - this menu allows the user to select the cylinder action. The default options are DBL, CE (HEVR), and HE
(CEVR). If HE suction valves are selected, then CE (HEVU) becomes available. If CE suction valves are
selected, then HE (CEVU) becomes available. Note the following abbreviations: DBL (double acting), HEVR
(head end valves removed), CEVR (crank end valves removed), HEVU (head end valves unloaded), and CEVU
(crank end valves unloaded).

Cylinder Action can also be selected from the Frame / Cylinder Data tab by single clicking on the selected action
in the cylinder picture.

Guide - this menu allows the user to select the type of guide (distance piece) to be used with the selected cylinder.
The following options may apply: STD (single compartment, short or long), S2C (short two compartment), or
L2C (long two compartment). Note that the compressor graphic on the "Frame/Cylinder Data" screen will change
to indicate the chosen guide type.

Suction Valve Unloaders

Advanced Cylinder Configuration Page 3 of 4

Suction valve unloaders are added to a cylinder by double clicking on the unloader graphic located immediately
above the suction valve. If there is not an unloader graphic, unloaders are not available in that position. Once the
unloader is added, its color will change to red, indicating that the unloader has been added and it is de-activated.
To activate the SVU, right click on the red unloader and it will turn green, indicating that the unloader is activated.
To de-activate an unloader, right click on the active green unloader and it will de-activate and turn red.

HE - suction valve unloaders will be added to all of the suction valves on the HE of the selected cylinder. This
will add a "U" to the cylinder description, reduce the HE suction valve areas by the factor indicated in the
"Customize Cylinder" window (default is a .925 multiplier), and add CE (HEVU) to the cylinder action options
menu.

CE - if selected, suction valve unloaders will be added to all of the suction valves on the CE of the selected
cylinder. This will add a "U" to the cylinder description, reduce the CE suction valve areas by the factor indicated
in the "Customize Cylinder" window (default is a .925 multiplier), and add HE (CEVU) to the cylinder action
options menu. Note that applications using CE SVU (SAHE) are considered to be "special applications" and must
be reviewed by Ariel's Applications Engineering Department.

Spacers

Valve spacers are added to a cylinder by double clicking on the area between the valve and cylinder, or entering
the desired number of spacers into the blanks in the center of the cylinder graphic under "Spacers". If the valve
sets directly against the cylinder, then valve spacers are not available in that position. Once a spacer is selected,
the blank area between the valve and cylinder will be colored in and the appropriate amount of fixed clearance
(indicated in the spacer blank) will be added to the cylinder. Spacers will be shown as "installed" for a given
operating case by being colored green and "uninstalled" by being colored red. A red or green spacer indicates the
spacer is purchased. Double clicking on a spacer will toggle the spacer between installed and not-installed (green
and red).

Spacers are installed at time of shipment as the default configuration. If the spacers should be shipped loose rather
than installed, right click on the spacer and select "Ship Spacer Loose".

Remove a valve spacer from purchase by right clicking on the spacer and selecting "remove spacer"

For information on custom spacers, refer to spacers in the "Customize Cylinder" box.

Valves

Selection - double clicking on a valve brings up a menu showing standard valves available for that position, and
the basic information for each valve. Double click on a valve in the menu to select it for that position.

Discharge Event - per the Ariel Application Manual, the discharge event refers to the time interval in milliseconds
for the discharge valve plates to open, stabilize and close. Should this time window become too short, higher valve
impact velocities will result, and consequently reduced valve reliability. Ariel has set the limit for the discharge
event to be 2.7 milliseconds. Discharge event times of between 4.5 and 2.7 milliseconds should be reviewed by
Ariel Valve Engineering to select proper valves for the application. Discharge event times can be improved by
lowering compressor speed, decreasing the compression ratio, decreasing cylinder clearance, or by decreasing
valve lift. To decrease the valve lift, select the discharge valve with the lowest lift from those available. In the
above example, the standard discharge valve (B-1502) has a lift of .079", the optional valve (B-2014) has a lift
of .063". This decrease in lift will help when the discharge event is in the 4.5 - 2.7 millisecond discharge event
range. If the run calculates 2.7 milliseconds or less, decrease compressor speed or lower the compression ratio on
the problem cylinder to correct the issue.

Right click - right clicking on a valve brings up a menu allowing the user to remove the valve or go to the
"Customize Valve" menu.

Clearance Pockets

Variable Volume - please see the "Variable Volume Clearance Pockets" section for information.

Fixed Volume - please see the "Fixed Volume Clearance Pockets" section for information.
