Restoring Soil Biology on Landscapes

Restoring Soil Biology on Ranches

Restoring Soil Biology on Farms
Case Study of Barley Grown in Ukraine
)2009(

Dr. Ingham invited to help improve the harvest of a large barley farm in a dry
part of Ukraine )2008(. They were having poor harvest and wanted to improve
them.
An experiment was made with 4 different treatment stages.
1. Control area with no treatments
2. Stage 1, an area where weeds were coated with compost extract.
3. Stage 2, an area where seeds were coasted with compost extract, and young
plants were sprayed with compost once.
4. Stage 2, an area where seeds were coasted with compost extract, and young
plants were sprayed with compost twice.
Treatment

The control area had been previously treated with organic fertilizers
and so was not treated for the trial.
After making high quality compost (with a high diversity and quantity
of microbiota) a compost extract was made and immediately used in
the seed coater to cover all the seeds except those in the control
area.
The compost extract was then sprayed onto the young plants at first
true leaf in both the other two areas and a second time one month
later in the most treated area.

Results )Continued(

The most notable visual difference between the treated and control
areas was the presence of seed heads on every tiller in the treated
area compared to almost no second tillers having a seed head in the
control area.

These differences led to an increase in harvest of more than 500%

between the control and the most treated areas.

from each trial zone.
Problems on Surrounding Farms
Recurring drought was a problem for farmers in the area.
Conventional Farmers were losing money and yields from
extreme weather events and input costs.

Instead of increasing his fertilizer use, Charlie opted for
restoring his Soil Biology.
Restoring Soil Biology on a Large
Scale with Compost

Even on large acreages, its still possible to restore Soil Biology.

Machine compost turning in conjunction with careful observation
allows a farmer or land manager to adjust the soil microbiology in
compost, and then scale it up for large areas.
Problems with weeds, soil erosion, and nutrient deficiencies can be
taken on at scale.
At any scale

It is possible to restore Soil

Microbiology.

will start to disappear.
