Kristin Knight Burrus

PROFILE
Kristin has worked in education for 19 years at Chattanooga School for the Arts and
Sciences (CSAS). In 2017, Kristin began a new adventure as the VW eLab Specialist and
Technology Integration Coach. Previously at CSAS, Kristin has taught 7th grade science,
high school Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Bioethics, and Physical Science. Kristin has an
undergraduate in Biology with a minor in Environmental Sciences and a Masters of
Education. She is a National Board Certified teacher in Science/Early Adolescence. She has
been a member of the National Paideia Faculty for 13 years and has facilitated teacher
workshops all over the country. Kristin has presented at local and national conferences for
Paideia Seminar and STEM curriculum integration.

Hamilton County Department of Education, TN - VW eLab Specialist
and Technology Integration Coach
August 2017 - Present
VW eLab Specialist: Full time teacher in the VW eLab where students
use digital fabrication tools for critical thinking and collaboration.
Duties include maintaining all equipment, collaborating and creating
units with K-12th grade teachers to utilize the VW eLab to leverage
problem based learning units focused on content standards.
Computer Science Discoveries Teacher: Teaching code to 7th -9th
grade students using the Code.org curriculum.
Paideia Seminar Mentor Teacher: Coaching teachers in Paideia
Seminar through modeling, observation, and shared planning sessions.
CSAS Leadership Team: Administrators and Academic Coaches
collaborate to provide feedback and make building-level decisions on
curriculum, budget, and procedural issues.


iPLC Facilitator: iPLC is a professional learning community for teachers
at CSAS to learn about integrating technology into their curriculums.
Teachers meet monthly to investigate, collaborate, and practice new
skills.
EdCorps Facilitator: EdCorps is an entrepreneurial club where students
use Design Thinking to create, develop, and sell a product. After
replenishing supplies for their business, students then donate
proceeds to a charity of their choice.
Co-Facilitator for High School Technology Student Association and
Middle School Bright Spark Innovators.

Teach to Lead Team: Team of two teachers, two principals, and one
district leader chosen to facilitate and implement a Teacher Think
Tank, consisting of additional teacher-leaders, tasked with using
Design Thinking to drive personalized professional development
opportunities in Hamilton County Schools.
Tech Goes Home Chattanooga: Facilitating a class of parents and
students focused on technology skills including Google Apps, digital
citizenship, and Chromebook use.
Paideia Institute Team Leader: Team responsibilities include planning
and implementing summer professional development for faculty and
staff of CSAS.
STEM Teaching Fellows Cohort 3: Professional development program
to create a classroom STEM curriculum and to curate STEM resources
to share with Hamilton County teachers.
Cabinet Member, CSAS Shared Leadership Team: Working as a liaison
between teachers and administration to provide feedback and make
building-level decisions on curriculum, budget, and procedural issues.
Grade Level Seminar Team Leader: Organizing and leading
collaborative meetings with other seventh grade teachers which result
in weekly seminar lesson plans.
Leadership Fellows Cohort 6: Co-creator of Scholar's Journey a
program for 9th and 10th grade students to foster a smooth transition
to high school, by teaching reflection practices and goal setting, to
create an increased sense of belonging.
Facilitator of teacher professional development including Robotics in
Middle School for the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network and
Making the Most of Shared Devices and Coding in Middle and High
School for Hamilton County Department of Education Teacher Tech
Prep Summer Workshop. .


Presenter Integrating Paideia Seminar into Math and Science Classes
for the Magnet Schools of America Conference and Differentiating
Instruction in Paideia Classrooms for the National Paideia Conference.
Public Education Foundation (PEF) Ambassador: Serving as a liaison
between PEF and CSAS.
Gates Foundation Small High School Teacher Leadership Seminar:
Assistant leader for a Hamilton County teachers workshop designed to
improve technology in classrooms using Understanding By Design
principles.
Earth Club Facilitator: Mentoring a group of middle and high school
students interested in environmental stewardship, environmental
education, and leadership development.
First LEGO League (FLL) Coach: Mentoring a group of 4th through 8th
grade students as they compete in regional robotics competitions.

Southeast Regional Tennessee Teacher of the Year, 2017.
Hamilton County Teacher of the Year for Grades 5-8, 2017.
Teacherpreneur Cohort 3, 2016. After winning 3rd place at the
Teacherpreneur Incubator Pitch Night, I am working collaboratively with Public
Education Foundation, community members, and a multidisciplinary and
multi-grade level school team to create a STEAM Hub and Innovation
Workshop for CSAS.
Fund for Teachers Fellowship, 2015. Partnering with a CSAS math teacher to
create an independent study in STEM and Earth Science by traveling to the
greater San Francisco, CA area. Learning from and collaborating with


professors and engineers from U.C. Berkeley, architects and computer
designers, as well as educators from science and technology museums.
Developing multiple problem-based learning (PBL) Units of Study in Earth
Science and Engineering based on this fellowship.
