The Provost and Senior Vice-President is the Chief Academic Officer of the University and is responsible
for: setting the university's academic strategy and priorities with view to improving the education and
research performance of the university; oversight of faculties, academic related portfolios and university-wide
centres and institutes; oversight of academic staffing including recruitment, development, reward and
recognition, policies and procedures; strategic leadership for the delivery of academic programs; identifying
and cultivating interdisciplinary areas of excellence and collaboration.
The objectives of University Planning and Statistics (UPS) are to:
improve and support the development of strategic, academic and operational planning and decision-
making processes within Monash;
monitor, review and report on the Universitys performance in its core activities;
to optimise student load planning to meet University goals and targets and Department of Education
requirements;
fulfil legislative and other essential reporting requirements to external bodies;
manage and administer core university surveys; and
provide statistical information and analysis within Monash to support strategic decision making.

Position purpose
The Director, University Planning and Statistics is responsible for leading a high performing team to support
the institutional planning, decision making and student evaluation framework. Through the provision of
institutional research and high level strategic insights they will enable clear evidence based decision-making
and the effective delivery of the Universitys planning and performance management objectives. In addition,
they will provide advice to the University community on Government legislation and policy, and contribute to
sector engagement.
Reporting line: The position will work with substantial autonomy and report to the Executive Director, Office
of the Provost and Senior Vice-President who will provide broad supervision
Supervisory responsibilities: Supervise five direct reports and provide oversight of a team of
approximately 14 staff ranging from HEW level 4 to HEW level 10
Financial delegation and/or budget responsibilities: Responsible for an operating budget of $2.5M

Key responsibilities
1. Provide effective leadership and management of the University Planning and Statistics function ensuring
the needs of the Universitys senior management and governing bodies are met, services are customer
focused and add value and that there is a strong culture of continuous improvement and support for the
implementation of the Universitys strategy
2. Provide oversight of the student load planning and monitoring function, ensuring student load is planned
and monitored against the Universitys targets and the strategic aspirations of the University are
supported
3. Lead the provision of institutional research, analysis and expert advice to the Provost, Deputy Vice-
Chancellor (Education), Vice-Provost (Graduate Education), Vice-Provost (Learning and Teaching),
Executive Director, Provost Office and Faculty Senior Management to support decision making and
inform future priorities
4. Support the Universitys planning framework including the alignment, monitoring and review of strategic
plans in accordance with Focus Monash. Prepare and collate progress reports and key performance
indicator reports to Council, Academic Board and senior management
5. Undertake critical analysis of policy initiatives, performance assessment and related matters to inform
the decision making of senior management and the way they respond on issues concerning changes to
sector-wide policy or the operating environment
6. Coordinate the Universitys Commonwealth Government Funding Agreement process to align with the
Universitys strategy, prepare and review the Universitys Mission-based Compact and prepare the
University Commonwealth Grants Scheme Estimates of Commonwealth Supported places (EFTSL)
7. In partnership with e-Solutions, identify opportunities and contribute to co-design of reports, dashboards
and data for business intelligence reporting and predictive analytics
8. In collaboration with the Office of Learning and Teaching, manage core internal and external student
surveys for the University and associated analysis and reporting to deliver meaningful insights. For
example, Monashs Student Evaluations of Teaching and Units, or the national Quality Indicators of
Learning and Teaching (QILT) suite of surveys
9. Direct the continuous development and enhancement of the units data repository to ensure institutional
research and analysis projects remain relevant, add value, meet stakeholder needs, inform future
priorities and enable the unit to respond effectively to the external environment
10. Develop quality assurance policies and procedures to ensure data integrity and compliance with
statutory reporting requirements
11. Maintain strong external networks, particularly with the relevant Commonwealth Government
Departments, to ensure that the University is kept advised of issues and policy changes and is given
appropriate input into policy making at a national level

Key selection criteria
Education/Qualifications
1. The appointee will have:
relevant post-graduate qualifications in business and extensive relevant experience, preferably in a
analytics environment, or
extensive experience and management expertise, or
an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
