Office of the Chief Data and Analytics Officer


Office of the Chief Data & Analytics Officer supports and enables RMIT’s business strategy by leading
and driving the data and analytics agenda for the enterprise. This involves being accountable and
responsible for:
• Developing and implementing RMIT’s data and analytics strategy and ensuring ongoing
alignment with university
• Defining requirements and standards for data and analytics technologies to be delivered by
Information Technology
• Coordinating and governing data management activities for analytics and reporting
• Developing and coordinating advanced analytics capabilities to resolve key university
challenges.

Position Summary
The Data Analyst operates within a multi-disciplinary team, working closely with data scientists and data
engineers to develop and deliver data and analytics solutions to stakeholders across the organisation. This
includes performing analyses of key data sets to draw out insights to help inform decision making. The
Data Analyst will contribute to the development of best practice approaches aligned to the data
governance framework of the university.

Reports to: Manager, Data Analysis and Visualisation

Appointees are accountable for completing training on these matters and ensuring their knowledge and
the knowledge of their staff is up to date.

Key Accountabilities

• Perform analyses on large sets of data to extract actionable insights that will help drive decisions
across the university.
• Work collaboratively in cross-functional teams of analysts, data scientists, data engineers,
business partners to deliver data and analytics solutions to the organisation.
• Communicate data, insights and recommendations to key stakeholders across the university.
• Work collaboratively with stakeholders to gather requirements and contribute to the design and
development of analyses, dashboards leveraging agile development principles.
• Actively participate in team initiatives and projects and cooperate with team members in a
manner that reflects a commitment to team goals and objectives, effective communication,
information sharing and problem-solving practices.
• Contribute to the development of methodologies, tools and processes to inform a culture of
continuous improvement in data & analytics.
• Develop and maintain documentation of key work outputs.

Key Selection Criteria

1. Demonstrated experience and understanding of basic statistical tests, distributions, and a range
of analysis techniques.
2. Demonstrated experience in data visualisation techniques to communicate key concepts and
insights.
3. Good problem-solving skills with the ability to create, innovate and iterate solutions.
4. Evidence of intermediate to advanced skills in data and visualisation tools such as SQL, Python, R
studio, PowerBI and Domo.
5. Strong communication and interactive skills – oral, written, visual especially for triaging conflict,
navigating ideation barriers, mitigating risk, fostering thought diversity and liaising/ negotiating
with a range of people to achieve agreed outcomes.
6. A self-starter with a willingness to work independently and with minimum guidance.

Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children Check and other checks
as required by the specific role. Maintaining a valid Working With Children Check is a condition of
employment at RMIT.
