The spillway is the top horizontal structure of Figure 1, it is 128.07m long going from chainge
CH 0+00 to CH 0+124.32m and it has a width varying from 6.49 to 15.0m. The Spillway is
composed of the elements identified in Figures 4, 5 and 6 and listed below:
1. Spillway block (ogee)
2. Spillway facing walls
3. Spillway retaining wall foot
4. Spillway retaining and guide walls
5. Spillway slab
6. Right retaining wall of transitional part
7. Left retaining wall of transitional part with counter forts
8. Retaining wall foot in the transitional part
9. Transitional part slab
The spillway structure consists of an initial part with an inclined wall against the ground on the
right side and a curved structure for water in-taking called ogee in the left side (A; figure 4)
and another portion called transitional part (B; figure 4), with a vertical wall on both the right
and left side but with the left side ones supplied with counterforts.

Slope Stabilization Works (Method Statement No 13_Part 1). Note that the spillway slope
rock bolts installation was cancelled due to the occurrence of good rock mass properties.
Preparatory activities:
Excavation of Slopes and Foundation
Slope Protection (shotcrete + wire mesh)
Anchors Installation
Blinding Casting
Reinforcement Installation
Formwork Installation
Water-Stop Installation
Concrete Casting
Striking
1. Anchors installation
2. Blinding casting
3. Fixing reinforcement
Figure 9: Spillway right side wall displaying the installed anchors (Date 08/09/2013)
In some foundation areas some over excavation occurred as it was necessary to achieve
good foundation material. In these cases and in order to minimise concrete quantities large
rocks were placed in the blinding according to the sketch of Figure 11.
Figure 10: Casting blinding concrete C15 for the spillway slab (29/10/2013).
Figure 11: Sketch displaying the blinding casting approach for over excavated areas
(DMS_145 Detail of spillway dental mix below foundation slab).
Reinforcement will be placed into the working area by trucks and then manually moved into
position.
5cm height concrete spacers shall be installed between reinforcement and formwork to
ensure the appropriate cover is achieved.
Cleanliness during fixing of the reinforcement is a priority. Any rubbish or loose particles shall
be removed before concreting by using adequate compressed air equipment.
Fixing reinforcement shall follow the procedure described in MS-23 (Concrete Works-
Concrete Design Fabrication, Delivery& Placing) item 13.0.
Figure 12: Violet lines indicate the position of the expansion joint. Single violet lines indicate
the occurrence of one water stop whilst two lined indicate the occurrence on two expansion
joints.
Figure 13: Transverse section across the spillway expansion joint area of ogee, slab and face
wall area displaying the location of the single and double water stops.
Figure 14: Example of double water stop installation at the ogee (Wadi Dayqah Dam,
Sultanate of Oman).
Expansion joints between the slabs and walls of the spillway will be provided with sliding bars
placed in concrete as in Figure 15. Other end of such anchors will be provided with double
bituminous coats and a pipe of approved type, which shall be pulled on after bituminous
coating. Coating and pipe fixing shall be done before concreting.
The upper 2cm of the joint shall be filled with an appropriate sealing material.
Figure 15: Expansion joint detail in facing walls and slabs of spillway and transitional
part.
Formwork will be coated with a releasing agent, FORMCOAT WS100 (Appendix B), to
facilitate the striking.
Ogee section of the spillway and casting will be carried out installing a properly shaped site
manufactured wood formwork as shown in Figure 16.
Figure 16: Example of site manufactured wooden formwork of the ogee (Wadi Dayqah Dam,
Sultanate of Oman).
Concrete type C30 shall be used for the mix as indicated in Table 2. The estimated quantities
of concrete for spillway elements are shown in Table 3.
Figure 17: Example of casting stages for the wall footing of Spillway (drawing SCFB-35
Rev.00).
Figure 18: Example casting stages for the wall footing of spillway (SCFB-35 Rev.00).
During casting concrete workability shall be re-tempered adding admixture to the concrete in
the transit mixer under the supervision of the laboratory and the Engineer personnel. This
action is particular important for the inclined plinth casting where concrete workability shall be
adequate for creating a flat top concrete surface.
Casting shall be carried out progressing downwards along the spillway. Works can also start
from the last segment of the last transitional segment of spillway progressing upwards
allowing more than one team working on the spillway casting. Concrete shall be delivered
using a ready mix truck.

Concrete shall be poured hose into the wood formwork with a 5 flexible and concrete shall be
vibrated either using portable vibrators or vibrators installed directly on the formwork. The
formwork of the spillway slab is opened on its top flat side and its final flat shape will be
created by molding concrete with a trowel or a similar hand tool.
During casting particular attention shall be placed in filling and vibrating the parts adjacent to
the water stops with specific care to the area in between the double water stops where
additional vibrating/filling opening shall be created.
Aggregate stockpiles (sand, crushed sand and medium aggregates) and admixture bins will
be protected with proper shade to avoid any excessive increase of temperature caused by
sun exposure. The water will be cooled in the early morning by a chilled water plants and the
casting will not proceed until the temperature of the water reaches at least 8 C; the
temperature to the delivering place will not exceed 29C. All the procedures/matters
mentioned above are described in Method Statement No. 23/2012 (Concrete Works-Concrete
Design).
Before casting the surveyor will mark the required elevation to ensure the right level is
achieved. After the approval of the Engineer concrete will be delivered to site with transit
mixers which will discharge concrete in a pump (e.g. CIFA) pouring it into the formwork from.
Steel reinforcement and formwork temperature will be measured before pouring and if it
exceeds 45C spray water will be applied for cooling. During concreting enough equipment
will be available such as vibrators, shovels, transit mixers, to ensure the continuity of the work
in case of any breakages.
Upon Engineers request and as indicated in ACI301M-10, item 8.3.1.2a., thermocouples will
be installed at the center and at the surface of the nearest exteriors at designated places in
order to record temperature differential between concrete surface and core. Concrete
hydration temperature shall not exceed 70C and core to side concrete gradient shall not
exceed 19C.
5.2.7 Striking
Upon completion of pouring the concrete will be left under curing no less than 24 hours. All
the operations for removing the formwork will begin once having the approval of the Engineer.
During winter season a temporary shelter to protect the working area is necessary. The
sidewalls and the roof shall be covered, thus the temperature inside the shelter can be under
control. The surface of fresh concrete will be protected by polyethylene sheets when required.
During summer season, the ACI Committee Report 305R-99 for Hot Weather Concreting
should be taken into consideration with particular attention to the items below:
Placement of flatwork. During the depositing of concrete for flatwork on the ground,
the sub-grade should be moist, yet free of standing water and soft spots. In placing
concreting slabs of any kind, it may be necessary in hot weather to keep the
operation confined to a small area and to proceed on a front having a minimum
amount of exposed surface to which concrete is to be added.
2. Steel Reinforcement:
3. Concrete Mix:
4. Curing Compound:
DCP Setseal 44
Formcoat WS100
See Appendix C
The following equipment will be deployed on site to carry out the plinth reinforcing and
concreting:

In addition to the above various ancillary tools and equipment will be required (e.g. Oxy-

equipment, etc.).
A sufficient quantity of spares will be kept on site for each item of plant.
