Alexandrite Quality and Pricing

● Color Changing: The quality of Alexandrite primarily

depends upon the Color changing than vividness of the color.
Alexandrite's green hue is a result of chromium impurities,
which in incandescent light apears as brownish, purple,
reddish-purple or red to viewer. Chromium is the same
coloring element found in emerald. Broadly color changing is
defined based on:
Percentage of color change: The AGL (American Gem
Lab) endorses the percentage of color change system. Alexandrite
with a 100% color change shows complete color change on every
axis - all facets change color. If half of the facets change color, the
gem is classified as a 50% change and so on. Most highly priced
alexandrite has a color change percentage of around 85-95%.
Stones with a 60% shift should be considered fine.
Extend of color change: it is broadly defined as follow:
● Faint(below 50%): Vivid Green changing to Reddish Purple
● Moderate(50-70%): Fiery Yellowish Green to Yellowish Brown and
Lively Mint Green changing to Brownish Red
● Strong(70-90%): Vivid Yellowish Green to Brownish Pinkish Yellow
● Very Strong(90-100%): Though 100% color change is something
extreamly rare, Brownish Golden Green to Reddish Brown and Olive
Green to Reddish Brown considered as Very strong extend of color
change

● Clarity: Clarity of an Alexandrite is secondary factor for quality.

Comparing to other Precious Gemstones, Alexandrite tends to contain
very few inclusions.

shapes such as oval, round, pear, marquise and cushion, there

less than one carat to 2 carats. Larger sizes and better qualities
rise in price dramatically from Rs 3,00,000 to 6,00,000 and above.

● Treatments & Price: Alexandrite gemstones are typically

untreated, very rare alexandrite stones are dyed or oiled. Imitation
stones do exist and are synthetic (lab-grown) and others may be
natural 'simulated' gemstones, Natural Alexandrite price in India is
