1. INTRODUCTION
This design note presents the design of piercap for location RP1 & RP2 supporting 25.2+25.2m steel
composite superstructure. The design is carried out by limit state method as per below mentioned
codes. Vertical loads & horizontal forceswill be carried by POT-PTFE bearings, Piercap is designed
for combined flexure and torsion. Vertical and horizontal forces on pedestals are calculated and
applied in staad model to obtain bending moment, shear and torsion in the piercap. This design note
is also applicable for piercap at location at RD1P3, RD2P1 and RD2P3.
Braking forces and longitudinal seismic forces are distributed to fixed and free bearing as per
expresssion given in IRC:6-2014 and Concrete bridge practice by V K Raina (pg. 84) considering
resistance of POT-PTFE bearings.
For Live load reactions on pier, class A and 70R vehicles are applied as moving load in STAAD
model. These reactions are distributed on the individual bearings according to their maximum
eccentricities to consider worst effect on the design.

2. DESIGN DATA
2.1 Materials, Partial safety factors and design strengths
Concrete of grade M35 is used for piercap and pedestals. Steel Fe500 is used for both components.
RLs of formation levels and bed levels are considered from GAD.
PB2 (Max ht pier)
Formation level = 110.009 m.
Existing GL = 99.600 m.
Pile cap top level = 99.100 m.
Pile cap bottom level = 97.300 m.
Fixity level = 87.300 m.
C/c distance between pier on A1P side = 25.2 m.
Effective span of girder on A1P side = 24.0 m.
Impact factor for A1P side span = 0.240
C/c distance between pier on A2P side = 25.2 m.
Effective span of girder on A2P side = 24.0 m.
Impact factor for A2P side span = 0.240
Total depth of Superstructure = 1.914 m.
C/c dist. between bearing in trans. dir. = 2.500 m.
C/c dist. between portal legs (pier) = 10.4 m.
Depth of pedestal and bearing = 0.4 m.

The eccentricity of LL producing the maximum transverse moment in combination with DL and SIDL
is considered further. Transverse moment due to SIDL is added in the above two cases and the
maximum MT producing case (transverse eccentricity) of LL is considered for further calculations.
Longitudinal forces arising out of braking longitudinal seismic/wind force on superstructure are
considered in the following section. Total braking/seismic/wind force acting over the one unit is
considered for the distribution of the forces on fixed and free bearings. Pier is to be designed for the
maximum horizontal force arising out of combine action braking and friction of the bearings.

For transverse seismic case 'D' will be changing as 20% of LL is to be considered. Hence the time
period and corresponding AhT is calculated as follow. The force is assumed to be acting at CG of
superstructure.
The direction of transverse seismic force is reversible but it will be critical when it acts in the direction
of maximum transverse moment of SIDL + LL. So the direction of the transverse seismic force is
calculated depending upon the eccentricity of the LL considered as calculated in the earlier table. For
positive eccentricity transverse seismic force is taken positive and vice versa.
Longitudinal forces.
During transverse seismic case longitudinal forces will be same as that longitudinal seismic forces.
For vertical seismic case 'D' will be changing as 20% of LL is to be considered. Hence the time
period and corresponding AhT is calculated as follow. The force is assumed to be acting at FRL.
The direction of vertical seismic force is reversible. But for convenience of design the direction is
considered in combinatin with SIDL + LL considering their transverse eccentricity. And for footpath
load it is combined with the FPLL as well. So the direction of the vertical seismic force is calculated
depending upon the eccentricity of the LL considered as calculated in the earlier table.
As per IRC-6 all the piers in median verge shall be designed for vehicle collision load as per IRC
provisions.
Loads and stresses are considered as per Cl 222 of IRC 6:2014. Pier is checked for residual
component of collision load considering that pier protection is provided. The loads considered are as
follow;
Wind forces on superstructure and substructure are calculated as per Cl 209 of IRC 6:2014 as
modified vide notification No. 33 dated 31st January 2008. The calculations are presented as under.
From table 5 given under Cl 209.2 of IRC 6:2014, follwing values are taken

As per Cl 209.3.6 transverse wind load on live load is calculated same as above except CD shall be
taken as 1.2. Height of veichle shall be 3 m above deck for the entire length. The area covered by
crash barrier shall be deducted.
From table 5 given under Cl 209.2 of IRC 6:2014, follwing values are taken

This will either upward or downward i.e it will reduce the vertical load on pier or add to the vertical
load on pier.
As per Cl 209.3.4 and Cl 209.3.6 longitudinal wind forces on superstructure and LL shall be taken as
25% of the transverse forces calculated in earlier section.

Vertical forces.
Vertical forces due to horizontal effect of LL are taken considering the up and down reactions. It is
obvious that the down reaction will not be critical as compared to upward reaction. Hence only
upward reactions are considered on one side.

1.2) / effective span.
