Below is my Geotechnical engineer’s reply to my enquiries on the micropile’s lateral buckling concern in my last
project with design of micropile.

Please provide your comment/recommendation on the micropile lateral buckling issue for pile segment between
pile head and top of Fort McMurray formation, around 5m~6m length pile segment.
What I want to know are
1) How is the soil restraint in top 5~6m soil and how is its impact to 318mm dia pile lateral buckling
2) Will the soil treatment mentioned in item 5 help with this lateral buckling issue ?

Existing disturbance of the overburden soils (sand and gravel) is mainly by the hydrovac. Expected method of
drilling (Stratex) will minimize soil disturbance because drilling and installation of temporary/permanent casing
will be a simultaneous process. We do not expect formation of any significant voids or even loose material
zones in the annulus between the casing and hole wall. If, additionally, the pressurized grouting will be used, the
overburden material properties will be even stronger than were originally recommended for the pile design.
Thus, I believe that we are on a safe side of the pile design under lateral loads. By the way, buckling may occur
only within the most upper portion of the pile (down to 2 maximum 3 m). Your group analyses already assumed
void down to 1 m, and p-y modulus to the 2 m depth was low, only 8000 kN/m cub. I do not expect that under
pile head deflection of 6 to 8 mm, buckling of steel pipe, filled up with grout, occurs.

Below are the design example from my previous project using batter micropile and modeling in Group v8

The exterior of 168.3mm dia. pipe sleeve, (318mm-168mm)x0.5 = 75mm, around 3” ring space, will be grouted to
maintain the pile shaft skin friction resistance.

Pile Group Layout

• All piles are modeled as OD=168.3mm, ID=124.4mm L=15m for 11 vertical piles, L=18m for 4 batter piles, the
grout and DYWIDAG bar are neglected for stiffness contribution
• Pile numbering and pilecap coordinate are the numbering system used in Group v8
• 4 x 350kN point load is applied on top of pile No 1,3,13,15 to account for permanent vertical load applied at pile
head
