Exercise 2.1 Hexagonal closed-packed “lattice”

A hexagonal closed-packed (hcp) structure is called “ideal” if it corresponds to a close packing

of spheres centered around its lattice points.
p
(a) Show that c/a = 8/3 for an ideal hcp structure.

(b) Sodium metal transforms from bcc to hcp at about 23 K (the “martensitic” transformation).
Assuming that the density remains fixed through this transition, find the lattice constant
a of the hexagonal phase, given that a = 4.23 Å in the cubic phase and that the c/a ratio
is ideal.

Exercise 2.2 Reciprocal lattice

Given a set of primitive vectors ~ai of a d-dimensional direct lattice and a set of primitive vectors
~bj of the reciprocal lattice with
~bi · ~aj = 2π δi,j .
Let
d
X
~k = ki ~bi
i=1

with ki ∈ R. Show that

~k · R
~ = 2π N ~
R
~ in the direct lattice if and only if all ki ∈ Z.
with NR~ ∈ Z for all R

Exercise 2.3 Reciprocal of the simple hexagonal lattice

(a) Show that the reciprocal lattice of the simple hexagonal Bravais lattice is also a simple
hexagonal Bravais lattice rotated by 30◦ about the z-axis with respect to the direct lattice.

(b) What are the lattice constants of the reciprocal lattice if those of the direct lattice are a
and c ?

(c) For what value of c/a does the ratio have the same value in both the direct and the dual
lattice ?

(d) If c/a is ideal in the direct lattice, what is its ratio in the reciprocal lattice ?
