General description
The NOV SLT slip lifting tool is a hydraulic operated tool for lifting and lowering drill pipe slips for
drill pipe range 4.1/2” to 7.5/8”. It allows rig crews to raise/lower standard rotary slips out of a
LSB by remote control, reducing fatique and increasing safety. Fully utilized to existing manual
slips, it can remain on the rotary, even when drilling using a top drive. The SLT can be locked into
a LSB (Landing String Bushing) that is placed into the Master Bushing. The base of the SLT is
slotted for easy removal from the pipe string. Two sides are closed by a safety plate. The SLT is a
non-rotating unit and can remain in position on the rotary table with standard slip equipment
during the drilling operation.

Safety
WARNING: It is not allowed to weld on SLT’s. Please contact an authorized
NOV repair facility.
WARNING: Ensure that all hydraulic lines are disconnected before ANY work
is performed on the SLT. It’s not always sufficient to isolate the hydraulic lines
by using a ball valve, as the hoses might function as an accumulator, which
could generate movement of the SLT. The ball-valve is installed to ease
connecting and disconnecting the QD with pressure still on the line and for
disconnecting the SLT from the power source. For additional safety is is
mndatory to use the mechnical lock pins during installation, adjustment,
(dis)assembly & maintenance.
WARNING: SLT’s which have experienced wear or are found to have cracks
must be replaced or repaired by a NOV authorized repair facility.
WARNING: Only original NOV OEM parts must be used. Improper welding can
cause cracks and brittleness in heat-affected areas which can result in
dramatic weakening of the part and possible failure. Repairs involving welding
and/or machining should be performed only by a NOV authorized repair
facility. Using a SLT that has been improperly welded or repaired is
dangerous.

Category I.
This category involves observing the equipment during operation for indications of inadequate
performance. When in use, equipment shall be visually inspected on a daily basis for cracks, loose fits or
connections, elongation of parts, and other signs of wear, corrosion or overloading. Any equipment found to
show cracks, excessive wear, etc., shall be removed from service for further examination. The equipment
shall be visually inspected by a person knowledgeable in that equipment and its function.

Evaluations of indications
Relevant indications: Only those indications with major dimensions greater than 1/16 Inch (2
mm) and associated with a surface rupture shall be considered relevant. Relevant indications
are indications that results from discontinuities within the test part.
NOTE: If any relevant indications are found, contact NOV to determine the next
course of action. Preferably an inspection report (with photograph or sketch)
detailing the serial number of the equipment and the type, length and location of
the indication should be presented. NOV will be able to advise the proper and
most efficient repair.

Operations
WARNING: For service purposes, always ensure the SLT is in “up” position
with the safety pin locked and disconnected from the hydraulic supply.
WARNING: Keep hands and feet away from any pinch point or undesignated
areas.
WARNING: The SLT could cause severe injury to bodyparts when opening or
closing. Stay away from moving parts at all times.
Slip handling
WARNING: There may be a situation thinkable that a light piece of tubular
combined with high hydraulic pressure will result in inadvertently lifting the
slip when commanding the controls. This may result in dropping the pipe in
the hole.
Procedure
Slip lifting: pick up the pipe string with the elevator, the slip can now be lifted out of the bowl.

Description
The Castrol HyspinTM AWH-M hydraulic oil range of shear stable high viscosity index lubricants are based on the latest
stabilised zinc additive technology.
Application
Hyspin AWH-M contains a shear stable additive system which helps maintain the viscosity characteristics of
the product over a wide temperature range even during prolonged use and imparts a very low pour point which enables
the product to be used in very cold environments. It exhibits excellent corrosion and wear protection as well as
outstanding thermal and oxidative stability. In addition, Hyspin AWH-M has excellent hydrolytic stability and separates
rapidly from water contamination upon standing.
Applications include:
• Outdoor equipment which are likely to operate in wide temperature ranges, such as machinery subjected to cold start
up conditions and high temperature continuous running. Examples include off-highway and marine applications.
• Indoor manufacturing equipment that incorporates control systems requiring minimal viscosity change with
temperature. Examples include precision machine tools.
• The Hyspin AWH-M range is fully compatible with elastomer materials commonly used for static and dynamic seals,
such as nitrile, silicone and fluorinated (e.g. Viton) polymers.
Hyspin AWH-M grades meet the requirements (for appropriate viscosity grade) of:
DIN 51524 Part 3
Cincinnati Lamb (Milacron) P 68-69-70
Denison (Parker Hannafin) HF-0
US Steel 126 & 127
Eaton (formerly Vickers) I-286-S & M-2950-S
Bosch Rexroth RE07075/RE90220
Advantages
• High viscosity index and low pour point enables the product to be used over a wide temperature range, with good
shear stability which means no excessive loss in viscosity due to mechanical shearing.
• Excellent anti-wear performance provides extended wear protection for hydraulic pumps. Reduced down time due to
unscheduled maintenance and savings from replacement part costs.
• Excellent water separation and hydrolytic stability means reduced down time through prolonged lubricant life and
increased equipment reliability.
• Good filterability gives a cleaner system with less frequent filter changes.

paragraphs. Additional each step needs to be signed by the “Operator” and/or by the
“Quality Inspector”.
2.3. The “Operator” is the person that does run the initial check/measurement. He/she needs
to sign the respective step with his/her identification stamp in the box behind the
respective paragraph.
2.4. The “Quality Inspector” is the person that verifies certain key checks/measurements
performed by the “Operator”. He/she is also responsible for the final acceptance of the

3. Introduction
3.1. This Factory Acceptance Test is to be performed as outlined in the following test
procedure. All test procedures must be followed in order to ensure that the power slip
frame is operating as intended by National Oilwell Varco. This test procedure assumes
that the power slip frame is fully assembled and the hydraulic manifold has not been set.
Ensure that the drive pin locks are set to the “lock” position when in use
Ensure that the hydraulic power source used for testing can produce 5 gpm at 2000 psi
Ensure that all hydraulic lines are securely fastened
Set all reducing and load holding valves per corresponding hydraulic schematic
Set mechanical stops to allow full stroke of Power Slip Frame
Set flow control valves for a 2 second full extend and a 2 second full retract
3.4 Instructions:
Assembly or Test personnel are responsible for completing this test form. Stamp or
signature in the “completed” column is required for each step identified below that has
been completed.

4. Testing
When this test is performed, all foreign objects must be kept clear of entire power slip frame
to prevent personal injury and damage to frame. Make a note of any pre-existing paint
defects and scratches to inspect possible operating interferences. Perform a minimum of
(20) up / down cycles and inspect for interference and hydraulic leaks. Check that the frame
extends in 2 seconds and retracts in 2 seconds.
Completed: __________________________________________
Comments:
Lift LSS1250 to the fully extended position and hold for 5 minutes. There should be no
drop (drift) of the slip pull arm.
