DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF

BIRUL BAZAR TO SAWALMENDA-GHANA ROAD

FOR Km 0.0 to 14.00

(AS PER IRC: 37-2001, SECOND REVISION)

(A) DESIGN DATA:-

(i) Passenger Car Unit = 564 PCU
(ii) Commercial Vehicle per Day = 119 CVD
(iii) Design value of C.B.R. = 7.00 %( Average)
(iv) Traffic growth Rate ® = 0.075
(v) Design life in year (n) = 10 Year
(vi) Vehicle Damage Factor (F) = 1.50 (for rolling / plain terrain)
(For traffic volume 0 to 150 CVD)
(vii) Distribution of Commercial traffic over the carriage way (D) = 1
(As explained in Para 3.3.51(i) for single lane road)
(viii) Carriage way width = 3.75 M (single lane)

(B) COMPUTATION OF DESIGN TRAFFIC

(i) The traffic in the year of completion is estimated using the following formula:-

A = P (1+ r)x
Where, A = Initial traffic in the year of completion of construction in terms
Of Number of commercial vehicle per day.
P = Number of commercial vehicle as per last count = 119 CVD
r = Annual growth rate of commercial vehicle (for 7.5% annual
growth rate = 0.075
x = Number of year between the last count and the year of
completion of Construction = 1 year.
A = 119x (1 + 0.075)1
= 127.925 say 128 CVD.
(ii) The design traffic is considered in term of the cumulative number of
standard Axles (in the lane carrying maximum traffic) to be carried
during the design Life of the road. This can be computed using the
following equation:-

N = 365x [(1 + r)n – 1] x A x D x F

r
N = the cumulative number of standard axles to be created for in the design
in Terms of msa. (Million standard axles).
Other data taken as per para (A) & (B)

N = 365 x [(1 + 0.075)10 – 1] x128 x 1.5 x 1

0.075
N = 991427.89 say 0.99 msa.

(C) COMPUTATION OF PAVEMENT THICKNESS:-As per the IRC: 37 Para

3.2.3. The pavement thickness has been calculated from fig. No. 1 for the
following data:-
(i) The design of pavement to carry traffic in the range of 1 to 10 msa.
(ii) The design C.B.R. value of 7.00 %

CONCLUSION: - The total crust thickness required for a new road project is
375.00mm.
(D) COMPUTATION OF PAVEMENT COMPOSITIONS:- Refer as per
the design catalogue plate I, IRC:37-2001, recommended and interpolated
for :-
(i) Design traffic range 1 msa.
(ii) C.B.R. = 7.0 %
(iii) Total pavement thickness = 375.00mm.
(iv) Average annual pavement temperature = 35 degree C.
CONCLUSION OF PAVEMENT COMPOSITION FOR WIDEN PORTION:-
(i) Thickness of wearing course = 20mm.
(ii) Thickness of WBM = 225.00mm.
(iii) Thickness of granular sub-base = 150.00mm.
TOTAL THICKNESS REQUIRED = 375.00mm
As per the IRC: 37-2001, para NO. 4.2.2.2, the recommended minimum thickness
Of granular base is 225mm for traffic up to 2msa and 250mm for traffic exceeding
2msa.
Therefore provide pavement compositions for widen portion of road as follows:-
(a) Bituminous surfacing = 20mm thick O.G.P.C.
(b) W.B.M. GR. NO.III = 75mm thick.
(c) W.B.M. GR. NO. II = 75mm thick
(d) W.B.M. GR. NO. II = 100mm thick
(e) Granular sub-base = 150mm thick.
TOTAL THICKNESS PROVIDED = 400mm
