Abstract

In this introduction to the problem, Parental involvement is mentioned as a problem in education.

In recent years, parental involvement has been a factor that schools and teachers have mentioned

and seen having a positive impact in students’ education. However, lack of parental involvement

can affect not only students but teachers and schools. There are barriers that impede parental

involvement, but that can be improved with an extra push to parents.

Parental Involvement in Education

Introduction

Parental involvement is when parents are actively involved with their child’s

education and are well informed of their overall education. It can be beneficial for students in

various ways, such as support. If students know their parent is involved, they have an extra

support from them. The parent can allow for their children to feel motivated and worthy if they

are informed on what is going on in their educational life. There is however such a thing as too

much involvement, which is why it is important to have a balance. Parents should be aware of

what it is that their child is learning if it is something that can possibly affect their own views as

a parent. However, the lack of parental involvement can affect a student more than if they are too

involved. Parents should be engaged in their child’s education even if they are not too educated

in a topic that their child is learning because they can still show support through other ways,

which include helping them with time management, encouraging them, being aware of school

fundraisers, and many other ways that can help students.

Background of the Problem

Recently school administrators and teachers have made a connection with parental

involvement and student academic outcomes. For instance, they have noticed the positive

impacts that it brings to them in the classroom and in their overall education that goes even

beyond the school. Parental involvement was previously mentioned in the No Child Left Behind

Act and strongly talked about as schools began to demand more participation from students’

parents (Wilder 1). They began to do research and found good academic changes that resulted

from parents having high expectations for their students and assisting them in. However, the lack

of parental involvement is seen as a problem in schools as parents are not as involved with

students’ education as they would want them to be (8). For instance, some parents do not care

about their child’s education, so they will not see it necessary to attend parent-teacher

conferences. They are important because it is, after all, a conference either praising their child or

concerns teachers may have of them. If a parent does not involve themselves with their school,

there will not be any actual link with them, nor will the child feel that their education matters if

their parent does not take their work into consideration.

Stakeholders Involved

Parents and students are the main stakeholders involved, but others than can be

affected including the teachers, classmates, and school community. Parents and students are the

main stakeholders due to the parents being the main impact on students’ education. If a student

has their parents’ full support, then they will feel determined to continue being successful in their

education and striving for more. Teachers are involved in the situation as well because if they

want to meet with their students’ parents, it does not necessarily have to mean something bad.

They could be impressed with their students and want to show off their good work and behavior.

It is important for parents to acknowledge that and offer support to their kids. In addition,

classmates are involved, as well because not all of them may have the same parental

involvement. They can be friends with classmates and get to know their parents and see how they

value their child’s education despite their own parents showing no support. Schools are also

involved because if parents are involved, they can be a part of the PTA and help with events

helping out the school.

Existing Challenges and Barriers

Some existing challenges and barriers may include lack of time from parents, lack

of education, and rejection from the students. There can be parents who may be too busy to get

involved with their students’ life, which is not what many teachers would want, but it is realistic.

They may already have too much going on or may not see their child as much as one would

expect. Another barrier is lack of education from parents, which means that the parents may not

have any knowledge on their kid’s homework or be able to assist them. It could be difficult for

students because they may need help, yet their parent cannot assist them. Furthermore, another

barrier is rejection from students, which refers to how a student may not want their parent to be

involved in their education or school activities.
