Workshop Goal and Procedure
Goal:
Model a Explosive blast in an urban
environment
Procedure:
Start AUTODYN standalone
Set up and solve a problem using 2D
Axial Symmetry to model the
initial spherical blast
Set up a 3D problem to model the
urban area of the blast
Remap the results from the 2D
model into the 3D model as initial
conditions
Run the 3D solve

Quick Instructions
• Split into two problems
– 2D axisymmetric problem to model intial spherical
blast to create remap file
– Remap file read in to provide initial conditions for the
3D analysis

Quick Instructions
• Start AUTODYN and create a new 2D axially symmetric
model with default units of mm, mg, ms
• Load in air and TNT from the material library
• Set up the 2D multi material Euler wedge predef as shown
below
i=1 i = 451
Min radius Max radius =
= 100 mm 45,000 mm
4 © 2011 ANSYS, Inc. March 9, 2012
Quick Instructions
• Create a detonation point at origin (0.0,0.0)
• Set the wrap up criteria to a time of 50 ms
• Run the model to completion, which should take approximately
3,500 cycles
• Create the .fil file by selecting write datafile under additional fill
options and enter the filename urban_blast_wedge
• This creates a file urban_blast_wedge.fil in the working directory
5 © 2011 ANSYS, Inc. March 9, 2012
Quick Instructions
• Create a new AUTODYN model file called urban blast with
3D symmetry and default units (mm,mg,ms)
• Load air from the material library
• Create a flow_out Euler boundary condition called outflow
with preferred material of air
• Create a 3D Euler, Ideal Gas part using manual definition
with maximum i,j,k indices of 81,81,61
• Select fill block from within the zoning options and use the
explicit file type option and select the file buildings.blk
• Load in the settings file urban_blast.set for an appropriate
view of what’s been generated
• Switch on gauges in the plot menu to see the gauges that
have been included

Quick Instructions
• Read in the previously written urban_blast_wedge.fil datafile to
create the appropriate initial conditions of the explosive
• Select both materials to remap
• Select a remap origin of (300,000.0,225,000.0,0.0)
• Respond yes to all warnings as data is processed
• Apply the flow_out boundary conditions to all outer faces of the
block apart from that of k=1
7 © 2011 ANSYS, Inc. March 9, 2012
Quick Instructions
• Select boundaries in the plot
section to ensure they have
been correctly applied
• Set a wrap up criteria with a
time limit of 1000ms
• Save the file every 25 ms
• Run the simulation and
create some animations
