CHAPTER I

Background of the study

Introduction

Owning a pet is a big responsibility, it is your task to feed them, make them clean and comfortable.

Having a pet is common on people who are alone or elderly especially those who are not adequate in social

interaction with some people. The most common pets are dogs, cats and fish but many animals can also be pets

like birds, hamster, and some reptiles. But what is the importance of pets? Why do we need to take care of

them?

For some people, pets are not just animals, they also consider it as a family member and a friend.

Owning a pet has a lot of rewards including unconditional love, companionship, and emotional support, can

reduce stress levels and increase the social activities of someone. Pets are also important in society, like dogs,

dogs can be easily trained and have a strong sense of smell. In home, dogs are the one who guards, in addition,

dogs help police and fireman to rescue people and the use of their sense of smell in to detect if there is a bomb

or be trained as a medical dog that can help to detect some disease like cancer. People may not know but some

pets can also be trained to help people with impairment (blind and deaf people) in their everyday lives like

opening and closing of doors and the like.

It’s important to take care of pets because pets are like humans, in order to live they also need food,

water and shelter. It is the pet owner’s main responsibility to ensure their health and welfare. When pets get

sick, like us, they need medical attention and have a yearly check-up to a veterinarian. Also, the most important

thing is to give back to them the love and care that they give to us. It is important to take care of pets specially

to maintain their cleanliness and healthy living, some pet owners who don't have time, bring their pets in pet

grooming center that can help busy pet owners to provide their pet needs.

but to keep them healthy. Grooming is about maintained both your pet’s physical health as well as their

because it removes dirt on their body like dead hair and tick that is sometimes the reason why they get sick.

Review of Related Literature

This section includes the foreign literature which are the review of related literature from another

country.

According to Lakritz (2016), Grooming is as important as bringing your pet to the vet for regular

checkups. It’s maintaining the well-being of your animal. Good groomers don’t just cut for beauty; they look

for signs of trouble beneath the furry surface. A groomer may discover health issues before you know they

exist, including cysts, bad skin conditions, and ear infections—all of which can hide under fur. For example,

matted hair can progress quickly from causing mild skin irritation to infecting wounds. Fleas and ticks can live

relatively invisibly in a hair mat, and mats around the hind end can cause an accumulation of feces that

sometimes impedes defecation. Severe hair mats can grow so tightly that they can restrict or cut off blood

circulation, which can eventually require amputation.

According to the American Pet Product Manufacturing Association (2007), the booming pet grooming

has experienced steadily increasing profits from $2.7 billion in 2006 to an astonishing $2.9 billion in 2007. With

dogs in almost 45 million homes in America, grooming services have become even more important. It is also

important that an accurate customer base is identified so that the best service can be provided. There are two

types of grooming service set-ups, the retail based groom shops and the mobile groom shops. Given today’s

lifestyles, variety in services being offered is important. The commercial/retail groom shop tends to clients that

8
have the time to drop their pets of for a day at the doggy spa, while mobile groom shops allow for a client to

stay at home while your beloved pet is groomed right in the comfort of your home. Although, mobile grooming

on average is $10 more than a commercial/retail location, this doesn’t stop clients from using this time-saving

service.

According to Kalaygian (2018), with all of the competition that brick-and-mortar pet stores face in

today’s crowded pet supplies market, it’s no surprise that these retailers are increasingly looking for new ways

to draw customer traffic into their aisles. For many, pet care services fit the bill perfectly, as they not only

complement a pet store’s traditional retail fare nicely, they can also contribute to the retailer’s reputation as a

valuable, trusted resource for local pet owners. Even better, these offerings simply cannot be replicated by the

online retailers that have become pet stores’ largest source of competition in recent years.

Pet grooming—whether in the form of a full-service salon or self-service dog wash—has become a

particularly popular choice for specialty retailers that want to incorporate a service component into their

businesses, and for good reason. Because many pet owners will use grooming services regularly throughout the

life of their four-legged friends, these offerings have the power to inspire a steady stream of repeat visits. In

addition, depending on what types of grooming services a pet store offers and how they are handled, these

services can also be a direct source of revenue.

Despite all of this upside, though, grooming services do present a unique and formidable set of

challenges. With this in mind, Pet Business asked five successful retailers to share their experiences and insights

into what it takes to harness the power of grooming in a pet store environment.

According to Feng (2018), grooming isn’t just about how the animal looks. Yes, a dog will look much

better after the appointment—what animal wouldn’t after a bath and fresh hair cut? But it’s not just all shiny

ribbons and wacky fur dye.Grooming is actually good for the dog! Some dogs may need a weekly groom, while

others need one every 6 weeks. Every dog needs a different amount and frequency of care, and not all dog

9
owners know this. In fact, many dog owners (especially new ones!) don’t even know why dog grooming is

important.

According to Normandale (2017) Pets are part of the family so it only makes sense that you would take

care of them the same way you would a member in your family. Just like people, pets need to see the doctor for

regular veterinary care. Be going to the vet's office, many problems can be caught early and treated before they

turn into bigger problems. Monitoring your pet's health is important to make sure he or she is as healthy as

possible.

questionnaires that will be answered by the respondents. It was given personally so that the proponents can

clarify things that are necessary for the study. Through this process, the researchers we're able to gather the

information needed in the study.
