The key takeaways are that the Jib Crane Apparatus is used to demonstrate the triangle law of forces and its application in engineering mechanics. It consists of a jib (compression member) and tie (tension member) and is used to measure the forces acting on them under different loads.

The purpose of the Jib Crane Apparatus is to help engineering students perform experiments to verify the triangle law of forces. It allows students to visualize and measure the compressive and tensile forces that develop in the jib and tie under different loads.

The Jib Crane Apparatus demonstrates the triangle law of forces by drawing two triangles - one using the forces acting at a joint as sides, and another using the lengths of the members as sides. The similarity of the two triangles verifies the triangle law of forces.

INTRODUCTION

The ESOLS (ENGINEERING EDUCATION EQUIPMENT) Jib Crane Apparatus has been designed
to demonstrate students about an introduction to the Jib Crane that affect their behavior in
practical applications.

Jib crane is a laboratory apparatus helping the engineering students to perform an

experiment in the subject Engineering Mechanics, for verifying the "triangle Law of Forces".
The hook at the joint of the Tie rod and Jib, when loaded, causes tension in the Tie rod and
compression in the Jib. Total weights in the hook represent the load at Post. Two triangles are
drawn, first by taking forces acting on the Post, Tie rod and Jib as sides and second by taking
lengths of the corresponding members as sides of the triangles. Similarity of the two
triangles obtained as above verifies the "triangle law of forces". For performing the
experiment, lengths of all the three members of the Jib Crane Apparatus are to be measured
manually in the existing equipment. Measuring the lengths manually, involves measurement
error, affecting the accuracy of the experiment.

THEORY

A Jib crane set up consist of a compression member (Jib) and a tension member (Tie) which is
connected to a rod as shown in Fig. 1

External force is supported by Jib and tie.

The Force Balance Diagram of Joint B:

The Force Balance Diagram of joint B (Fig. 2) shows that there are three forces acting at point
B.

develops in jib.

meet at the common point B. The system is Coplanar Concurrent force system.

EXPERIMENT

Aim:

To measure the forces in jib and tie of a crane.

Equipment Needed:

 Jib Crane Apparatus

 Measuring Tape
 Hanger
 Weights

Procedure:
1. The Jib is erected by attaching the Tie at joints B and C such that the height of C was
greater than that of B. The weight hanger is attached at point B.

2. Some load say 1.5kg is placed in pan so that the tie is at least stout. This may be
treated as zero weight (including weight of hanger)

3. Initial readings of forces in jib and tie are recorded in kg.

4. Now some load W (say 1kg) is added to the hanger

5. The lengths AB, BC and AC are measured with the help of measuring scale and
recorded.

6. Final readings of forces in both the balances are recorded.
