SOUND ATTENUATOR
Noise control in air conditioning systems is in many cases just as the critical as the environmental conditioning itself. Sound is transmitted through
the ducts systems by the fans and also generated by some of the duct mounting elements and accessories. Sound attenuators are designed for
attenuation of fan noise in ventilation and air conditioning systems. A sound attenuator is a multi variable system, it consists of an arrangement of
duct mounted absorbent splitters arranged with air flow passages between them.
Attenuation is achieved by reflection, impedence and absorption type. The absorption type attenuators are dependent upon
• Attenuator Width
• Attenuator Height
• Attenuator length
• Thickness of attenuation splitter
• Distance between the splitter (or) air way gap
• Number of attenuation splitter
Sound absorpting type attenuators works by directing the air flow containing the unwanted noise through series of highly sound absorptive passages
of various length and width of casing. The sound energy to be dissipatted by the sound absorpting media while allowing the air flow relatively
unimpeded. The length and the ratio of width to height relative to the frequency of the sound determines the amount of sound attenuation or
insertion loss that the silencer will provide. Generally the longer the silencer the greater the attenuation specially at the lower frequency ranges.
Because the interior surface of the air flow passages are the high density fiber glass covered with R.P. Tissue and overlapped by a perforated metal and
of a smaller free area than the originating duct work. Friction is encountered that results in increased resistance. This is known as Static Pressure or
Pressure Loss in the attenuator.
Noise is defined as objectionable or unwanted sound. Fan noise is generated by a turbulence with the fan housing and will vary by a fan types, flow
rate pressure and fan efficiency.
.
Noise from the fan inlet and outlet which is transmitted along the duct system is known as duct born noise. Sound other then the wanted signal in
room acoustics, the irreducible noise level measured in the absence of any building occupants is called Back Ground Noise.
Sound other then the wanted signal in room acoustics, the irreducible noise level measured in the absence of any building occupants is called Back
Ground Noise.
For the transmission or radiation of noise from some part of the duct systems to an occupied space or passing through the fan casing is called break
out noise.
SOUND PRESSURE
Pressure variations produced when a sound wave propogate through air are extremely small when compared with atmospheric pressure.
(Basically sound is a pressure variation that the ear can detect) These pressure variations are caused by a vibrating object or surface or by turbulent air
or gas.
FREQUENCY HZ
Respective, regular disturbances caused for an example by a fan blade turning of constant speed, create recurring oscillations of the same
cycle of particle movement, and the number of cycles per second is referred to as frequency (F). The unit of frequency is the Hertz (1cycle/second).
73
NOISE CRITERIA (NC CURVES)
A method has been developed that allows us to generate a single number to present the sound level of a device. This single number is called
the NC (or) Noise Criteria and it makes allowances for the various db levels in each octave bands and human sensitivity to each of this frequency
bands. Sound pressure levels are determined is each of the desired octave bands. These pressure levels are plotted on a standard NC Curve. The
highest pressure when measured against the NC Curve, regardless of frequency, determines the NC of the outlet.
DECIBEL
The unit used to measure sound. The decibel scale measurement is simply a logarithmic ratio of the measured sound pressure and an agreed reference
pressure.
OCTAVE BAND
To better analysis the characteristic of a sound it is necessary to devide the sound in to of several bands each of which contains a limited
range of frequencies. The sound Pressure level is less than measured in each frequency band or octave band.
Typically for air distribution systems 63, 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 H2 only considered.

INTRODUCTION
System balancing is essential for any cooling / heating air distribution system to perform to plans and specification delivering the required amount of
air through each products. The terminal velocity is a critical element in system balancing and will have a major effect on the throws listed. While doing
a perfect and competitive selection of air outlet are occupant comfort ,energy conservation ,airquality and the cost. The intention of the above we
provide a consise approach to the proper selection of air distribution outlets. The details given in this guide are refered from ASHARE HAND
TERMINOLOGY OF VENTILATING,
AIRCONDITIONING AND REFRIGIRATION
1. AIR INLET :
A device through which air is delivered on extracted from airconditioned space ,grilles, diffusers registers and slots may be used as air inlets.
2.AIR OUTLET:
A device or openings through which the air is discharged to a conditioned space. All assesories connecting duct adaptors or other mounting air
passages may be considerd as air outlets.
3.GRILLE:
A Louvered or perforated face over on opening.
4.REGISTER :
Combination of grille and damper assembly.
5.DIFFUSERS:
An outlet designed to distribute air in varying directions and planes.
6. SLOTS:
A long and narrow air outlet with one or multiple slots for continue long rectangular opening with or without the adjustable blades and supply
device hit and miss damper to vary the air flow rate and direction.
7. AIRFLOW RATE:(Q)
The volume of standard air per unit of time that moves past a given plane, expressed in cubic feet per minute or liters per second (l/s)
8. NOZZLE:
A device designed to generate a low energy loss and thus produce a maximum throw by minimum entrainment.
9. DAMPER:
A device used to control the volume of air passing through a terminal by varrying cross sectional area.
10.LOUVER:
A device used to intake the fresh air from atmosphere or expel the used air from the conditioned space with bird screen to prevent foreign bodies
and to prevent the entry of rain water
11.FIRE DAMPER:
A device which is installed in air distribution systems between two fire seperating compartments and is designed to prevent propogation of fire

COMFORT CRITERIA:
Modern environment controlled spaces consume significant amounts of energy in maintaining stable environment within the structure .The demands
for cooling and heating very greatly over time, and different statergies are employed to respond to these varying loads. Ventilation requirments must
also be met by the HVAC systems. This conditioned and ventilated air must be effectively delivered to the building occupants.
There are two principle design conditions in HVAC systems .Perimeter zone loads vary over a broad range from heating to cooling and are affected by
both exterior and interior factors . In interior zones the heat generated by lights ,occupants and office machinery provides a continues cooling
demand.
The proper seletion of diffusers is necessary to ensure that both occupant comfort and adequate ventilation mixing are provided .As the
choice of diffusers is based on both engineering and architectural concerns ,both the engineer and architect, need to have a say in the final selection in
addition, the ideal selection is dependent on the type and operation of the air supply to the diffuser, while there are many ways of supplying
conditioned to air to an office space including displacement ventilation ,underfloor vertical air distribution and task cooling ,this article will deal with
the predominant method ,the ceiling supply air diffuser for indoor air quality and comfort state requirments for the resulting ventilation
mixing, air temperatures and air speeds, and even turbulance intensity (the rate of change of the local airspeed) in the zone. Awarness of indoor Air
quality issues and concern over occupant complaints has increased the visiblity of proper diffuser selection, location and design. At the same time,
complaints of ‘stuffiness’ are finally being diagnosed as temperature, not indoor Air quality complaints.
The ASHRAE handbook provides recommendations for diffuser selection which have been included is at least one lowsuit as being the ‘acceptable
standard of care’. All available research indicates that when air distribution is provided from the ceiling, a throughly mixed condtion.
Through out the space is the desired result, further more the reasearch has proven that with properly selected ceiling diffusers,
execellent air distribution and ventilation mixing can be achieved, with many types of diffusers and in many types of spaces, including
the open land scope office.
The key element is the term ‘properly selected’. Diffuser selection ranges from the selection of a hole
cover (or architectural duct termination) to a detailed analysis of the diffuser air supply pattern in each
130
zone .A zone analysis is almost always prohibitive in terms of design time and probably not necessary for most spaces. Interior open office space
,which are typically in cooling mode year round ,can usally be charecterized in a general way ,and execellent diffuser selection made for these location
perimeter zones are more complicated ,with both thermal and aero dynamic concerns to be considered ,but again these can often be characterised in a
general way for the building design and exellent air distribution can be achived when there are problems. It is our experience that there was little (or
no) actual air distribution design , loads are considrably different than planned or products were installed which did not meet the designers
specifications.
Diffusers selections is in cooling should be based the ratio of the diffusers throw to the length of the zone /area being supplied at all design air flow
ADPT statistically relates the space conditions of temperature and air speed to occupants ,thermal comfort .This is similar way to the way NC relates
local conditions of sound to occupants noise level comfort. High ADPT values are desirable as they represent high comfort level . Acceptable ADPT
conditions are shown in the fundamentals Hand book for velocity less than 70 FPM and velocity - temperature combinations that will provide better
In analysing a test of air temperatures and air speeds in a loaded space , the temperatures and velocity at each measured point are used to calculate an
effective draft temperature .A draft temperature 00 is essentiallly thermally natural . Negative draft temperature equals to a sensatiton of cool ,where
as positive values represent a predicted feeling of warmth.
The percent of points, measured in the occupied zone having a calculated draft temperature between –3 and+2 where the speed is <70 fpm .the
The ADPI curves in the ASHRAE hand book of fundamentals (Chapter 31) summarise some of the tests that established ADPI and the relationships
L’ is the space charecteristic length in feet . This is usually the distance from the outlet to the wall or mid plane between outlets .This can also be
considered the modules when outlets serve equal modules through a space and all consideration can then be based on the module parameters (see.
table .1)
T50 is a catalog throw value to a terminal velocity of 50 fpm , a throw value can be selected using a catalog perfomence table by multiplying the
desired throw ratio (T50L) by the charecterstic length (L). The throw ratio is based on 9 ft ceiling height. The throw can be increased or decreased by the
same amount that ceiling height exceeds or is less than 9 feet.

ADPI may be predicted from table –1, or may be tested using the procedure outlet in ASHRAE standard 113-90 . This test standard was developed to
verify perfomance fro some GSA projects in the late 1970’s, and has been used to document the results of many air distribution systems. The validity
of the relationship between isothermal T50 and room length has been consistenly verified. Using this standard , and modern computer graphics
capabilities, room draft temperature profiles have been generated which illustrate well the movement of air temperature gradients in room.fig.2 is
just one example of temperature velocity profile generated using the ASHRAE 113 procedure and a PC based data acquisition systems.
132
ADPI vs AIR CHANGE EFFECTIVENESS (ACE)
ASHRAE has recently defined a term for describing the mixing of supply and room air replacing the some what ambiguous terms ventilation
effectiveness and ventilation efficiency with a new term ,Air change effectiveness or ACE. This term is used in both ASHARE standard 129, the method
of test for ,Air charge effectiveness and in the public review draft (Recently withdraw) to ASHRAE indoor Air quality standard 62-89R. The relationship
between ADPI and ACT has not been fully evaluated at this time, but the data available at present indicate that if a high ADPI is attained ,the ACE will
also be height while there have been no reported tests, where ACE was significantly below 100%, when cooling from ceilng . The ASHARE IAQ
standard ,62-1989, assures a ventilation mixing of 100% in setting minimum ventilation rates, if it can be shown that the 100% ,then the amount of
outside air must increased above the required minimum with presently available information ,when a high ADPI is measured , the ACE is high as well
for this reason ,the next revesions of the ASHRAE IAQ standard (now under continious maintenance) will likely recommend diffuser selction based on
ADPI in order to ensure acceptable ACE. It is possible however , to have a high ACE and low ADPI especially if the HVAC SYSTEM air is supplied directly
into the occupied zone uniform comfort will not be likely in this case , however.
This selection will result in maximum comfort for the application ,In the event that this selection cannot be made as out lined ,supply jet mapping can
be used to determine the discomfort areas in the space.
133
a flow rate/unit area and the diffuser’s throw performance ,and the result plotted on a graph when this is done the envelope of acceptable operation of
a diffuser based on cfm/sq.ft is presented. The diffuser spacing is twice the volume of ‘L’ or equal to the (average) distance between the diffuser
and the adjacent wall . The area served by a 4way pattern diffuser is there (2xL) ²
An example is shown in fig 4 . In this graph the x-axis is flow rate /unit area ,and the y axis is half the seperation distance or L, the charecteristic room
length horizontal curve lines are simply calculations of flow vs area sound , while the vertical boundaries are computed from the ASHRAE maximum
and minimum T50L ratio for this type of diffuser perfomance within the area bounded by the lines should an ADPI of 80% or greater.
This example shows the perfomance envelope of a perforated diffuser with a load resulting from a room/supply differential of 200 ΔT . Different
data T’s will result in different bad rates , and will charge the location of the vertical boundries some what.
An example of a design selection is shown with the arrows starting at cfm/sq.ft the engineer will proceed upward to the design flow rate (420 cfm)
yielding an NC = 35. Then the engineer will proceed to the left to determine the recommended seperation distance .The intersection is between 10 and
11 feet thus the diffusers, should be located 20-22 feet.
134
The engineer can determine the allowable turn down with this design. Tracing the horizontal path to the left most edge of the defined 80ADPI zone ,
and proceeding down to the x-axis,the minimum cfm/ sq,ft can be seen to be about 0.7 with this diffuser.
A procedure to calculate diffuser spacing using these charts would be as follows.
1. Detremine the cfm/sq.ft range for the space based on loads and desired supply temperatures (minimum flow rate should be based on
occupied minimum, not ventilation minimums)
2. From the 80% ADPI charts for a given diffuser (a number of these are provied below) select a diffuser type that works over the expected air
flow rates checking at both maximum and minimum occupied rates.
3. Check manufatures recommendations to determine if the diffusers jet pattern will have excessive drop at the desired flow rate, using ceiling
height as a parameter (The jet should not penetrate the occupied zone)
4. Check product perfomance tables sound levels for the NC compatibility, and check for acceptable pressure drop.
5. Determine diffuser spacing from selection chart Attached are examples of a number of diffuser types presented as flow vs spacing :4way
pattern diffusers.
135
Analysing these charts ,it can be seen that they have quite different ‘turndown’ limits .The perforated diffuser shown has quite a high flow capability
,but can’t be used below 0.7cfm/sq.ft this operation if different neck areas are analysed ,a different seperation distance results ,but it will be seen that
the flow/unit area limits don’t change appreciabley.
Linear diffuser:
For linear diffuser ( or any other two way pattern diffuser) the analysis is a little difference. The side to side spacing becomes a variable in the equation
and the result is a with multiple x axis.
Selecting diffusers using the above chart will result in selection that meet the requirments of the ASHRAE hand book of fundamentals. Experience has
shown that when these guidlines are followed exellent air distribution uniform temperatures and no objectationable drafts should be expected in the
space provided that acceptable temperatures are established as a function of the occupants clothing and actively levels , occupant comfort shourd be
assured as well .Indoor air qualitywhich ics many times a percepption issue will be assured as well.
136
Office space layouts are often revised in response to changing needs re-organisation and changing tenants, when space use changes are anticipated
diffuser selection s should be reconsidered ,as well significant changes in required air flows maypush the installed diffusers out of their recommended
operating range and fill height partitions may require re analysis of the rooms charecteristic length. 3
It should be noted, however, that several published research papers have shown the 5 or 6 feet high partitions (in 9 feet high room) do not
adversly affect air circulation in the diffusers meet the ASHARE ADPI criteria .The heat loads generated in cubicles create convection circuits ,that mix
the air fairely well .If the diffusers however ,have exessive drop or if there is insufficient mixing at the ceiling due to low air flows or diffuser throws
then localised regions of discomfort can result regardless of the partition height.
In perimeter applications, concerns focus mainly on heating. However, it is also well understood that the air conditioning system must handle
both heating and cooling. In cooling the perimeter can be handled best from diffuser locations in the lower part of the exterior walls. Economic
reasons, however, favour cooling from overhead. Several main approaches have been utilized for the ceiling cooling distribution. A system that must
cool a perimeter zone will exhibit quite different air jet performance in heating than in cooling. Winter cold airs down drafts exists at the perimeter
and may affect persons or equipment, and must be treated by the different to prevent complaints of cold discomfort.
All air overhead systems therefore must offer a compromise between heating and cooling demands. A ‘rule of thumb’ for estimating the effect
of for estimating the effect of downward projection of air at 50 FPM, is that the isothermal throw is increased or decreased by 1% per Deg.F. Delta –E
Sills tend to deflect cold air and project cold air horizontally into the room at that level. The cold air continues on to the floor level and the warm air
turns backup toward the ceiling. This action increases as the sill width increases as the sill width increases. As the sill height increases co does the
height of the stratification layer.
Generally 50% airflow to the window and 50% to the room is recommended. However, some adjustments to the flow are beneficials, so adjustable
diffusers are preferred.
Air directed at the window will mix with room air and the cold air that forms next to cold glass. The higher velocity air is not affected by the supply
air/room temperature differential. Slower velocities, however, are significantly affected, with warmair tending to rise back up towards the
grille/diffuser. In cooling, however, the cold air falls and proceeds alont the floor.
137
Fig.10. Diffuser directed at exterior wall
In a closed office, it may be desirable to ‘roll the room’. In this circumstance, a high induction (high discharge velocity) diffuser (typically a linear
diffuser) is uded to direct air away from the window directed towards the back wall of the room.
Another approach is to use a split system with a minimum constant volume of air to satisfy the perimeter windows or walls. A variable volume type
system with a regular diffuser handles the additional cooling. The split system results in a more satisfactory comfort level for cooling. It can be used in
a closed office or open plan arrangements.
Typically each perimeter situation must be considered as a unique design situation. Often, testing mock up is a good decision for large projects where
after installation modification would be expansive. To date, using a computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, while in theory of excellence tool,
has not yet been proven to be reliable tool.
Rather a ‘cold wall’ is set up with the perimeter geometry duplicated and actual outside air temperatures established, and detailed room
temperature/velocity profiles measured and recorded in accord with ASHRAE standard 113. In addition, smoke photos and actual occupant exposure
can be used to gain confidence in a given solution to the unique engineering situations that occur at each perimeter design.
138
Shown in Fig.15 is a plot of temperatures from a test of a room with a 0°F outside air temperature, and a twoway discharge diffuser located two feet
from the glass, with 10°F Delta –t and 1 CFM/sq.ft, conducted par ASHRAE standard 113-90.
NOISE CRITERIA
NATURE OF SOUND:
Sound is the sensation percieved by the human ear resulting from rapid fluctuations in air pressure. These fluctuations are usually created by some
vibrating object which sets up longitudinal wave motion in the air.In the case of air outlets it is caused by terbulance which create rapid pressure
pulses on the grille surfaces.
Most people have some intuitive idea of what constitutes a continious wave, for example by observing the ripples created by a pebble striking the
surface of water, sound waves are a particular type of a general class of waves known as elastic waves, which can occur in media which posses the
properties of mass and elasticity, if a particle in such medium is displaced, then the elastic forces present will tend to pull the particle back to its
original position.
The displaced particle posses interia and can therefore transfore momentum to a neighbouring particle,so that the intial disturbance can be
propogated throgh out the medium. The major distinction between sound waves and the ripples on the surface of water, when using this as an
analogy, is that water ripples are transversal , i.e. the partical velocity is at right angles to the direction of propogation while sound in air is propogated
by longitudinal waves ,in which the particle velocity in in the direction of propogation.
A number of terms in common use describe the nature of propogation of sound wave , i.e . plane, diverging, spherical, progessive and standing waves .
Noise control in air conditioning systems is in may cases , just as the critical as the environmental conditioning itself. Sound is transmitted through the
duct systems and is also generated by some of the duct elements including diffusers ,dampers, volume control and straitening devises ,terminal boxes ,
fans and even the ducts themselves . Noise is defined as also objectionable or unwanted sound .The absense of sound created by the air conditioning
system can be annoying .properly designed this sound can mask unpleasent noise of conversations, office machinery etc. to create a more workable
environment.
SOUND PRESSURE:
The pressure variations produced when a sound wave propagate through air are extremly small when compared with atmospheric pressure(basically
sound is a pressure variation that the ear can detect). These pressure variation are caused by a vibrating object or surface or by turbulant air or gas.
As sound measurment is primarily concerned with human comfort , it is measurment reference points
139
reflect the limits of human hearing .That is to say the lower limit to say ,the lower limit is 20ypa(20millions of pascal), the pressure change at there
sold of human hearing. The human ear can withstand pressure changes more than a million times this lower there shold. This would result in a rather
large and awkward measurement scale. To avoid this problem a logarithmatic scale called the decibel (dB) scale was devolped. This decibel scale
measurement is simply a logarith ratio of the measured sond preussure and an agreed referance pressure ( in this case of the thershold of human
hearing 20 ypa)
FREQUENCY OF SOUND:
Respective , regular disturbances caused for example by a fan blade turning at constant speed ,create recuring oscillations of the same cycle of
particle movement ,and the number of cycles per second is referred to as frequency (F) .The unit of frequency is the hertz.(1cycle/second) and the time
taken for the oscillation to repeat itself is the period itself is the peiod(T).
The normal range of hearing for a human ear is from 20Hz to 20000 Hz, it is most sensitive to sounds between 2KHz and 5KHz and is less sensitive and
higher and lower frequencies, most naturally occuring sounds produce pressure waves each at its own frequency and amptitude (dB) This is what
known as broadband noise as opposed to sound mode of single frequency termed pure tone . The equipment we deal with produces broad band noise.
To better analyse the charecteristic of a sound it is necessary to divide the sound to into of several bands each of which contains a limited range of
frequencies .The sound pressure level is less than measured in each frequency band or octave band. Typically for air distribution systems only bands
2to7 are considered .
A sound source has a certain amount of sound energy or power levels .The sound pressure measure in the room will be a function of the sound power
generated by the sources as well as distance from the sources to the measurment point and the amount of sound energy obsorbed by the walls and
transferred through the walls, windows etc..
Sound power levels cannot be measured directly ,It is usually calculated using sound pressure levels measured in the laboratory with known sound
obsorption charecteristc s sound power levels are most commonly referred to in decibles (db).Similar to pressure levels only the reference is to a
power (usually10-12watts) instead of a pressure most perfomence data will be presented in sound power levels as its establised a common reference
point and eliminates room absorbtion variables.
N.C Curve:
A method has been developed that allows us to generate a single number to present the sound level of a device .This single number is called the NC (or)
Noise criteria and it makes allowances for the various dB levels in each of the octave bands and human sensitivity to each of these frequency bands .
Sound pressure levels are determined in each of the desired octave bands. These pressure levels are plotted on a standard NC curve from (see fig.6) The
highest pressure when measured against the NC curve, regardless of frequency ,determines the NC of the outlet.
NC values gives a weighted value of the octaveband analysis as perceived by the human ear, A single number NC is often used by manufactures to rate
the noise of their equipment, particularly grilles, registers and diffusers.
140
ADDTION OF dB LEVELS:
Sound power levels and sound pressure levels expressed in decibles (dB) are logarithmic functions and therefore cannot be added directly .Rather than
determining the combined effect of two sound sources mathematically simpler approach is provided.
Note that when two sound sources are equal value ,the resultant will be 3db. Higher than eighther source .If the difference between two sources is
greater than 10db, the contribution from the quickest source can be ignored, can also be used when several sources are to be considered .The different
sources are added in pairs as shown below.

Diffuser selection is being becoming recognized as a critical problem in avoiding problems with a building’s design. Designing in accordance with
ASHRAE’s recommendations is a sure way of avoiding the creation of a ‘litigation rich environment’. The handbook of Fundamentals, Chapter 31,
alongwith manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines, provide tried and tested ways of designing to avoid complaints or problems. Failure to
select a diffuser with regard to proper design can result in discomfort and concerns over poor indoor air quality. Diffusers are created with specific
performance parameters inherent in each design. These parameters need to be understood and used in selecting the size and type of unit for each
situation. Architects and engineers need to co-operate to ensure all their needs are met with the guidance of the Engineering Manual.
