CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The psychological modern that discusses this is the withdrawal model with

a name that absenteeism represent individual withdrawal from dissatisfaction

working conditions.his finds empirical support in a negative associationbetween

the absenceand job satisfaction in particular the satisfaction with the work

itself.Factors attributed to absence from work can include stress family related

concerns, works culture, the employees ability to do job and supervisor

subordinate relationship.

Medical based understanding of absenteeism finds support in research

that links absenteeism for medical with mental and behavioral disorders diseases

of the digestive system, neoplasms and diseases of the genitourinary system.

Thisexcludes pregnancy, childbirth, and premium. The cost of this in enroll is 7.43

billion per year for male and 9.66 billion for females .Research allows that over

one trillion dollars are lost annually due to productivity shortages as a result or

medical related absenteeism. The line between psychological and medical

consultation is blurry given that there are positive links between both work stress

and depression and absenteeism depressive tendencies may lie behind some of

the absence ascribed to poor physical health as with adoption of culturally

approved sick role this places the adjective sickness before the word absence

and carries aburden of more proof than is usually offered

Evidence indicates that absence is generally viewed on mildly deviant

workplace behaviors for example, people tend to hold negative stereotypes of

absentees under report their own absenteeism and believe their own attendance

record is better than that of their peers. Negative attribute about absence than

bring about three outcomes, the behavior is open to social constant sensitive to

social context and is a potential source of workplace conflict.

Absenteeism is a habitual pattern correlated with emotional labor and

personal reasoning but there are resolution to finding ways to alleviate the cause

helley at al, (2016) says stress accounts for twelves percent of absenteeism in

the workplace a year, which is a matter in which the company needs to stay in

communication with the employee and work toward a solution a go cad example

of finding progress is forming an employee assistantship program (EAP) which is

a strategy to help workers deal with issues outside of worth that employees bring

to the workplace (Quinley 2003). This not only involve stress but other mental

health factors that employees deem worthy of attention EAP can help those

employees bring a more positive attitude to work which can allude to the creation

of a positive workplace environment.

Another matter in which employees’ absenteeism can be reduced is

involving the employees’ personal matter (I.E children at home, III family etc.)

and the willingness of the company to be flexible, perfect attendance is hard to

accomplish in the workplace. Outside matters always play factors in absences,

which can be spontaneous and uncontrollable flexibility is a key factor when

working a balanced business and its important for communication to floco

effectively in the workplace. Every company is different and absence in the

workplace should be limited. Effective communication can help in this effort to

avoid problems in the workplace. Absenteeism not only effects the individual

work, but also the company from a group standpoint communication remains to

priority when dealing with absenteeism communicating and willing to work

together to achieve a common goal in a main reason that managing this

effectively are to avoid absenteeism in the workplace. Place absence from work

include schedule time off, retirement and sabbaticals. These absence cause little

to no disruption to work spaces because of the time given to work around the

absence.

Unplanned absence from work is defined as leave that is not planned on

predictable. It includes sick time off, injured time off, special circumstance, and

absence without permission. Unplanned absence satisfaction and commitment.

According to Thomas (2011) there tends to be a higher level of stress with

people who work or interact with narcissist, which in turn increases absenteeism

and staff turnover. Buddy find the same dynamic where there is a corporate

psychopath in the organization.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The study aims to discover the rate and effect of absenteeism to students’

performance. In order to identify these rates and effect the following information

will be used as an input: the rate of absenteeism in terms of family, financial, and

friends. Questionnaires will be used to gather these data. In processing these, a

statistical treatment will be used. The obtained results will then be analyzed and

interpreted.
After interpreting the processed data, conclusions and recommendations

will be drawn from the significant findings.

the performance at Tapinac Senior High School (TSHS) in school year 2018-

2019. Furthermore, was only limited on the analysis of the Grade 11 and 12

students.
. The total number of this population is with the respective number of

students: (EPAS) students and (EIM) students. Each of the respondents were

given a questionnaire to answer.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is conducted to identify the rate and effect of absenteeism to

the performance of Grade 11 and 12 students in TVL track. The following will be

benefited by this study:

To the students- it is beneficial to them because this study shows the effects on

their performance that comes with absenteeism, In that way, they can think of

appropriate response and improve their performance.

To the parents- it is beneficial to them because it can raise awareness regarding

their child’s absenteeism habits or problems and how they affect their

performance.

To the teachers- it is beneficial to them because it gives way to understanding

why their students often absent in class so they can think of possible

interventions for the situation.

To the school administrators- It is beneficial to them because they can think of

feasible ways to deal with the addressed issue.

To the future researchers- it is beneficial to them because they can use this study

as a reference and guide for their study. They can also use this research study to

support theirs by extracting essential data to help them strengthen their study.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Absenteeism-is the habit of staying away from school without providing a

genuine or any reason for not attending classes

Performance- class participation, individual written work on papers and exams,

and group activities such as projects and presentations.

CHAPTER 2
METHODOLOGY

This chapter addresses the research design and methodology, including

the population, sampling technique, samples, research instrument, data

gathering procedures, and data analysis. It provides information and description

of the descriptive correlational study that attempts to identify the rate of

absenteeism on the performanceof students in TVL track.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study utilized a non-experimental design which Polit et al (2001:178)

identified as a design used in studies whose purpose is description and where it

is unethical to manipulate the independent the independent variable.

Specifically, this research used descriptive and correlational research design. It

aims to describe the rate of absenteeism to the performance of students under

the TVL track.

DURATION AND LOCALE OF THE STUDY

The study was conducted on November 2018 to March 2019 during the Second

semester of SY 2018 – 2019. The questionnaire will be floated by the researcher

with a written consent attached to each questionnaire signed by the Principal and

adviser. Tapinac Senior High school located in Donor St. East tapinac Olongapo
city. This institution is composed of various programs whose specific goal is to

develop competency and skill that meet the learning need of individual.
POPULATION AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The population used in this study is the students in Tapinac Senior High

School under the Technical Vocational and Livelihood track. Tapinac Senior High

School has four strands under the said track, particularly Electronic Product

Assembly servicing (EPAS) and Electrical Installation and Maintenance (EIM).

The total number of this population is with the respective number of students:

(EPAS) students and (EIM) students.

Within this given population, a total number of 46 respondents were chosen with

the aid of quota sampling technique.According to Saunders, M., Lewis, P. &

Thornhill, A. (2012) Quota sampling method is a non-probability sampling and it

can be defined as a sampling method of gathering representative data from a

group. Application of quota sampling ensures that sample group represents

certain characteristics of the population chosen by the researcher.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS AND TECHNIQUES

This research study employed a questionnaire checklist research

instrument. The questionnaire consists of one part. The questionnaire is made up

of 14 questions that were subdivided into three parts. The first five questions aim

to identify the rate of absenteeism to students' family. The questions from

number six to nine pertains to the possible rate of absenteeism to students'

financial while the last five questions are about the friends of students which

might be affected because of rate of absenteeism.

The reliability and validity of this questionnaire was tested before

dissemination. It undergone several changes and revision to ensure the

effectiveness and significance of the questions for the gathering of necessary

informations for the study.

The respondents answered this questionnaire through paper-pencil

procedure. A total of 46 questionnaires were dispersed to the samples from

different TVL strand. These questionnaires were collected right after the

respondents had supplied the needed informations, gathering a total of 46

answered questionnaires.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

Primary data gathering and secondary data gathering procedures were

used in order to obtain essential information for this research study.

The questions in the questionnaire-checklist were explained to the

respondents, as well as the directions and guidelines for answering, before giving

it to them to make sure that the informations that will be obtained from them are

correct, honest, and reliable.

The researchers administered careful attention to make sure that the

gathered data were not distorted, misplaced, adjusted or modified. The

researchers employed a Likert-type scale to ensure that the respondents would

carefully read each question, understand it, and respond to each item

accordingly.
All data gathered were treated with confidentiality and were only used for

the sole purpose of research. The data about the students’ rate and effect of

absenteeism in terms of grade level and laboratory activity regarding the rate of

absenteeism to their performance were collected, coded, and tallied.

Secondary data will then be gathered from related researches and

literature to support and strengthen the result from the data gathered from the

respondents.

DATA ANALYSIS AND PROCEDURE

The data gathered were then coded, recorded, and tallied.
