PROBLEM SET
I. Study/Research/Analyze the topic “Size and Slenderness factors” (Section
615.3.5 and 615.3.6) in NSCP 2010 or 2015 and answer the following
problems. (Also, use Timber Design textbook by Besavilla for reference)
1. The force on the 100 mm x 100 mm strut that makes an angle of 30° with
respect to the horizontal is 30KN. The angle that BC makes with the
horizontal is 12°. Allowable compressive stress parallel to the grain is 7.8
MPa and allowable compressive stress perpendicular to the grain is 2.62 MPa.
Using Hankinson’s Formula.
a. Compute the compressive stress on section
AB.
b. Compute the allowable compressive stress on
section AB.
c. Compute the compressive stress on section
BC.
d. Compute the allowable compressive stress on
section BC.

2. For the timber joint is shown in Figure, Ѳ = 30°. The allowable compressive
stresses are 19.65 MPa and 2.76 MPa parallel and normal to grain,
respectively. Determine the safe value of F.
2. Determine the maximum spacing of the wooden purlin shown in the figure
with the following data:
Ø = 50.28°
Wind load, W = 1.4364 kPa
Dead Load, D = 0.3744 kPa
Bay Distance, L = 3.05 m
Allowable bending stress, fb = 6 MPa
Purlin size = 50mm x 150mm
