Mechanical Testing of Rubber Compound

Specific Gravity – Part 1.5

Scope:
The purpose of the density test is to reaffirm that the correct ingredients are used in the right amount in
accordance with the specifications provided for the particular Master batch and compound

Testing Machinery and Standards:

Specific gravity, a good guide for assessing the uniformity of mixed rubber compounds, is
determined using the direct reading specific gravity balance.

Advantages of testing specific gravity:

 Is used to broadly determine the quality of the compound.
 To check the uniformity of mixed rubber compounds

Test Implications:
 A normal good quality compound made from natural rubber usually has a specific gravity in the range
of 1.1 to 1.25. A higher specific gravity than this means a higher percentage of additives, and thus
lower quality.
