Flex Resistance Testing – Part 1.7

Definition:
Flex Resistance test is used to determine the crack growth of vulcanized rubber which is subjected to repeated
bending strain or flexing and to measure the resistance to dynamic fatigue of vulcanized rubber and
elastomers test specimen when subjected to repeated bending and extension

Scope:
.Resistance to flex cracking is composed of two parts i.e. (1) resistance to crack initiation and (2) resistance to
crack growth. In crack growth testing, a crack is initiated purposely by means of a especially shaped tool and
the rate of growth of the cut is measured during flexing. In the case of flex resistance, the result is evaluated
by comparing with a graded set of standards are resenting increased stages of cracking from 0(no crack) to 10
(complete Cracking).

Testing Machinery and Standards:

De Mattia Flexing Machine (used for evaluation of tyre tread and side wall compounds)

Advantages of Flex Resistance Testing:

 To determine the crack growth of vulcanized rubber. Particularly useful in development of compounds
for OTR where crack growth is significant.
 To evaluate the effect (on crack resistance) of an elastomer when added to the rubber compound.
